I'm trying to find out what boatyards used to be in the area where I live in New Zealand, but am having no luck....

Anyone been through this before and have tips to share here?

Thanks!

Just out of Warkworth, on Kawau Bay.

I know there were a lot of boat builders around here- up the Mahurangi, around Kawau Bay and north of Takatu, around Whangateau etc, but I thought I'd find some sort of collected info online and I haven't so far.

What area are you?

My friend Chris McMullen of McMullen Wing Co. outside of Aukland may be able to help you. Chris has been a boat builder for many years and built the America's Cup Boat that took the cup for NZ. Check with your local phone directory as I would not give out his number without proper authorization.

Hi there,
I'm in Warkworth too, so can probably help you quite a bit with this.
The early boatbuilding in the area was around the mouth of the Te Kapa Inlet at the end of the Mahurangi Harbour. The Darrochs and the Darrachs had yards in the Te Kapa itself (I believe on the Soth Eastern side of the inlet. Scotts had a yard at Scotts Landing, although this was relatively short lived. Darrochs moved to Big Omaha (Whangateau) in the 1870s or 80s, and continued building in that area. That yard produced a large number of scows, including the surviving vessels Jane Gifford and Success. There were a number of other yards, including ones in the Matakana river.
Was there anything particular you wanted to know?

Daniel

No worries, I doubt either organisation would know much. The best source is the archives of the Warkworth Museum, they have a certain about of stuff. I've never actually got around to crawling up and down the sides of the Te Kapa inlet, but there may be evidence still there.
