LA Times reports (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-china-politics12-2008dec12,0,2413482.story) that Chinese are taking to the streets to riot, smashing windows and overturning police cars because unemployment is up to 4.5% and the economy is only expected to grow by 7.5% next year.

Chinese should develop lower expectations like we have in the U.S.

Or we should take to the streets.

Kinda hard, with a Grande Supreme triple shot mocha latte... skinny, in one hand and an iPhone in the other. ;)

Civil unrest is what the Chinese government fears most. Their army is big but not big enough to supress 500,000,000 angry peasants who haven't been getting their share.
If they don't supress this in a hurry it could explode into one big rumble.

Read where 3800 Chinese factories that formerly produced toys have shut down.

YES!!!! Welcome to REALITY!

Seriously though, it is a mess. When you consoder all thos Chinese who have traded lives in the cleen air of boonies for living ten deep in small apartments in the cities in order to work in new factories, it is likely to get even uglier over there.

It would be nice to think there is a real sea change going on in the world where people are realizing you can't have a quality life by filling it full of mass produced junk. And perhaps the global economy will retool based on a quality of life index that actually has a prayer of producing a quality life. But its just wishful thinking. We're all going down.

Clean air??? Are you kidding? The principle fuel there is coal. Very dirty Chinese coal. They compress it into flowery disks for home heating.
