Well, I've a crude web page showing some earlier and current efforts at making raised panels. It is at: http://homepage.mac.com/george_boggs/PhotoAlbum3.html

First ones (Fwd - V berth) are larger. Locker's will conceal so I hope won't look too out of sorts from latest effort. All remaining bulkheads are of similar dimension and close to the "golden rule proportion.

Everything is cut out and shaped for assembly. So, remaining four bulkheads should go pretty quick. Interior bulkheads are western maple and will be painted white. Exterior are mahogany. Where it won't show, I've attached marine ply to a rabbet cut in rails. It is glued and fastened with Kreg fasteners.

Gaudy, absolutely gaudy! ;)

That would be impressive wood work if it were from Herreshoff's own shop.

Be proud. Be very proud.

If a Mac would make my work look like that, I'd give in to Joe and buy one :D

Today was pretty productive. Can see at: http://homepage.mac.com/george_boggs/PhotoAlbum5.html

I appreciate the kind comments and the help I've recieved from you folks on the WB Forum. Norm, can I use you as a reference? We work on soft money (grants). If things don't come through next year I will be looking form alternate employment... maybe an apprentice shipwright?

Concordia 41, the Mac makes all the difference! So does the careful, selective camera shots :D

Question, are those truly 'floating panels'?

Dave the panels fit pretty snug with 1/8" clearance around perimeter. There are spacers to help keep centered (bits cut from dried silicon sealant). . Rails and stiles are 1 3/8" stock to accept molding on both surfaces. The profile leaves a beefy 1/2" quarter round supporting each panel. I hope this will be all right. At least I haven't any problems with my exterior doors and I live in PacNW.

1/8 inch sounds about right but,,,I think I would have precoated the edges of the panels and the inside of the dadoes. There IS going to be movement and I would hate to see anything crack or check since they are so nice looking.

Grain on the panels is oriented vertically is it not?

The grain on the panels is vertical. I was planning on treating the mahogany with oil before finishing bright. Hopefully it will soak enough to avoid the problems you describe. You can see from the earlier work that I primed the edges of the panels before assembling those made out of western maple.

Some pics of the outside of boat can be found at: http://www.ktkweb.org/styret/Matrikkel/MatrikkelDefault.htm Select Anna Marie 40 sq m in left hand column. She is a Norwegian boat and so, is on the Norwegian Wooden Boat Club's website with other Spissgatters. I'll see what kind of pics I can get inside the shop.
