Odetta, a legend who provided much of the soundtrack to the civil rights movement, died yesterday in NYC. Even at age 77, after 10 years of ill health, her voice was awesome.

She had been scheduled to sing at the upcoming inauguration of President Obama.

Great lady and a real smart-a$$, too.

My friend, Charlie, is on the Board Of Directors of a folk festival at which Odetta appeared four or five years ago. He encountered her being driven from the performer's area to her transport in a golf cart and asked if he might take her picture. She replied, "Only if I get to see what's under your kilt."

He got his picture.

Even when ill, she had a good humour which was infectious. She WILL be missed.

Such a shame. A truly unique talent.
