The genius (not a word I use lightly) is gone!

Such a shame he never saw it finished and was stymied in its completion!

No photograph could ever prepare you for this building in real life!

It's a pity that small minded and politically driven lackeys in Sydney sabotaged the completing of his vision, but that said the interior was not designed I think as a full blown opera house. The press did not help and neither did industrial trouble on the site. The first 'concert' was from Paul Robeson to the site workers part way through the build if I remember rightly.

Next to Frank Gheary's Gugenheim museum in Bilbao....Perhaps one of the top 3 ugliest buildings of the last century. Ofcourse Gheary's symphony hall in Los Angeles is in that mix too.....He has a real knack for ugly.

frank ghery had computers to plot out dimensions. utzon did this the old fashioned way and no doubt influenced ghery. although utzon didn't have the final say on the opera house interiors they form a nice internal expression of the
exterior form. it is a stunning piece of work from any vantage point!

Have you been there Lefty?? You ARE kidding us right?

I have to agree with Duncan here Lefty.

The building in its setting is simply amazing.

It sits on a plinth on the end of a peninsula in Sydney Harbour.

I don't think it possible to understand the power of the building without having been there.

BTW, Sally and I did the Harbour Bridge climb in 2000 and it looks magnificent from the top of the bridge as well.

Perhaps it is a "Had to be there" thing....But in pictures, it's ugly. But then again, I'm a known conservative traditionalist....

Jeezus Rufus, how did you manage such a clear day?

The Bigfella
12-01-2008, 09:33 PM
Yeah Rufus - that's an amazing day. I've just had a look at a photo of me in the same spot - overcast, etc - it rained on the way down. At least I'm wearing a leather jacket in my photo though and I'm not chained to the railing.

Oh Puleeze! indeed! That doesn't even qualify as architecture in the modern use of the word..... That's just...... self agrandizing nub rubbing block buildings for little boys who got old.

There you go.... don't let inspiration get in the way of good architecture.

I have not been there, and have always thought it was beautiful, just from the photos. I suspect that it's even more impressive in person.

I have to admit it's not my photo, just one I pinched to illustrate my point.

However our photos of the day are as clear as that, but the management has them tucked away somewhere.
