Referencing my "pic of the new boat" post below from 11/24, this boat is going to be needing some replacement ribs and other woodwork here and there, as well as a complete refinish...inside and out. Point is, the wife and daughters are bugging me for Christmas ideas and this might be a good time to start planning. Any specific tools I should make sure I have that would make this job a little easier? What are the major tools we use in reworking an old wood boat (since I never have done it afore)???:)

Start with some cordless drill/drivers and good drill bits.
You will spend hours at a drill press making bungs to fill screw holes.
Clamps, lots of clamps!

A thickness planer! You have control of a piece of wood when it comes to length or width if you have a skill saw. With a planer you have ultimate control over your building material. I didn't know how true this was until I got one! You need one too!

Have all of the above and agree. Once you get this far, a 14" or bigger band saw is worth its weight in mahogany. Lots of not straight lines in a boat.

A really bada;; table saw. I used cheap junk for years and then picked up an old Unisaw (had to convert from 3 phase to single and went from 3 to 4 hp) with an extended table Beisemeyer (sp) setup at an auction for 300 bucks. I thought it was high at the time but turns out it was way cheap, even with the new motor. Now I kick myself in the a;; everytime I think about the power feed on it that sold for $250 that I passed on. This saw can handle sheet goods to 5 by 10 and the fence rail marks are dead center to the blade, neat stuff. A good bandsaw (I have a Laguna 16, a friend gave it to me) is also indespensable. You will save lots of lumber with it. Live on ebay, lots of great stuff there, cheap, if you know what you want.

Oh yeah, routers, loose and in tables, they can do anything. You need every size available. Peruse pawn shops until they know you by name.

Home Despot has the Ryoby cordless drill, 18 volt, on sale here for 20 bucks. Buy six of them, you'll need the batteries. The drill ain't to bad either.

Cheaper still, in the long run, and near future, and definitely far future, would be to get a big bag of marshmallows and invite all your friends over to watch the boat burnin. Boats are addictive, tools are even worse. Run away,, run away now.

Seriously, isn't it a little too early to be face first in the punch bowl??? ;)
