What is this? The LA of the South or what? We made it here around five thirty yesterday evening to spend Thanksgiving with the twins. Boy, have they grown!

I can't believe the size of this city. I knew it was big but had no idea just how big. {Make's note.} Tell Sue to get me a GPS for Christmas.:D

Anyhow, everybody have a nice Thanksgiving!

Those little GPS units are amazing for figuring out alternate routes.

Marilyn gave me a Magellan Roadmate for a recent birthday. We've spent some time on our routine errands trying to flummox it and it doesn't skip a beat.

But every once in awhile we get the voice saying "If possible make a legal U-turn."

Couple of days ago, it took us down a street in Lansing we didn't know cutting diagonally through one of our frequent routes. One of those times we turned to each other and at the exact same time said "Did you know this street was here?"

I'm thinking hand held GPS. I want one that I can take on the boat as well.

Two different animules, MM. The units for navigating the highways aren't going to be much good on the water, and vice versa. ;)

So that means I'm gonna need two? I don't know. I may just continue to do it the old fashioned way.

It's been many decades since I've seen it but I've always thought I would like to go back to the Cyclorama.

Just got back home from driving through Atlanta. Mike they have a pretty good zoo. It is over in the same area of town as Turner Field.

Zoo is not bad, cyclorama is pretty cool and right close to the zoo. Still haven't been to the aquarium. Wren's Nest is another ok stop, and the carter library is close as well. Not a great tourist town imho but I'm from boston where there is a never ending supply of stuff to do and see so I am a bit biased. 20 years in Atlanta and it still doesn't do anything for me.

It's too damn big. Aren't they already building a bypass around the bypass?

My son in law went to grad school in Atlanta and lived in Buckhead. He was always trying to get me to come up and go to a Braves game. I have been to games up there in the past, but in all honesty it would take more than that to get me up to Atlanta these days. I have never been to Los Angeles, but from what my father tells me, yeah, I think that you can compare the two. Atlanta is HUGE.

Don't know how true that is - I have a garmin car unit loaded with the road map of the UK but it looks is if it could be loaded with the OS Topographic maps as well and the internal battery is claimed to be good for 5 hours....

Even without the correct map loaded, it will give you a 3D position fix, albeit in degrees and decimal parts thereof - a scheme used by no chart I've ever met.

Cunning little brute, and quite subtle.

I don't care much for Atlanta. Its a monument to petty local and municipal politics standing in the way of good urban planning, been that way for 25 plus years. Nothing works in Atlanta.... traffic sucks always, the airport sucks, the cops way suck, the Falcons suck (got that in there for you Chad) and Atlanta doesn't just have a water shortage problem during drought years, they've been stealing Alabama's and Florida's water for years... justto mention a few things.

Besides that, Gwinnett stole our hockey team, and we have never forgotten the affront. Apparently it is impossible to get from Gwinnett into Atlanta in the evening to see the Thrashers, so they had to have their own team and they took ours.

As I understand it, the Richmond Braves will be moving to Gwinnett very soon, so it appears that they don't just steal hockey teams :).

Got lots of pics. I don't have a connection for my camera here. I'll post them when I get home on Sunday or Monday.

We had a great Thanksgiving!:)

The aqarium costs a bunch from what I understand. I don't really want to spend a whole lot of money on tourist attractions but we are going downtown today and I'll be happy just seeing some of the city and sight seeing,... I believe.

I gotta disagree on the airport. Far fewer problems there than most I have been to and they do that while moving more passengers than anywhere else in the country. Heck, even the Japanes modeled an airport after atlanta, it's gotta be fairly efficient. You want a lousy airport go to Boston.

bamamick
11-28-2008, 10:56 AM
I have to agree on the airport.....if you are making connecting flights. I have never driven to it so I don't know all the problems there (I have taken the MARTA), but if you are flying in from P'cola it is one of the easiest airports in the country to move around in and make your flights. Of course, once you get on your plane you are usually 25th in line for takeoff, but that's another story.

Mike, the CNN building and Underground Atlanta used to be free to walk around in. Can't really remember too much else. I will say that growing up my kids would have rather gone to Atlanta and the parks there over Orlando any day of the week, and they did. They must have been up there seven or eight times at least.

I'll never forget driving a motorcycle from FL. to CO. and I-75 was detoured through downtown Atlanta. The semis were brutal getting back on the interstate and there was convoys of them. Trying to do the speed limit as to not get a ticket and the trucks were starting to fly by me and anyone who has ever ridden a bike next to a speeding semi going by can relate to what I was going through. Driving a bike heeled, is not fun like a sailboat. Finally I just said screw it, twisted it up to about 105 mph to get ahead and lose the mess. I don't think I slowed down much until around Marietta. Now that I think about it, Memphis was no picnic either. Between the traffic in Atlanta and St. Louis, from then on out I swore to take the Southern route.
