With nothing left on my Melonseed but a few coats of varnish, I've started on yet another! In 1957 an outfit (I think in Canada) put out a line of boats called "Skipper-Craft". I've come upon this nice 15 footer, for the price of $100 bucks, including the trailer. The hull is cold molded marine birch, with a Mahogany ply deck, Mahogany seats, thick oak framing.
Right now, my brother and I (he's the handsome one in the picture), plan on sanding down the deck, then refinishing it. We'll take off the rub rail, and install a nice new oakk one after the hull is stripped and repainted with Kirby's White. Nice tumblehome look in the stern, a windshield which we've removed.
Dry as a rock inside. Not an ounce of Rot. Needs a new steering linkage, and she'll run on a 35 HP Mercury. What can I say? I love it!
The seller gave me the original brochure too. Thought you might like it. Describes the hull as "Five Ply UNILAM "pressure cooked" impregnated with phenolic resin glue. And, "notice the comfort and convenience of the walk-through on the center deck. A feature for the 'nautical lass.' "Strong as Herculeas" (Don't you love this stuff?!)
Anyway - I need to get my hands on a new "old school" style wheel, and some appropriate gauges. Hard to find a good 35 mph gauge, but I found that Teleflex makes one which is off white (perfect).
