Horse Tack Trunk
My daughter needs a horse tack trunk to hold her horses stuff in at college. Anybody seen or have some plans for something like this? I'd like to build her something for Christmas. I figure since we've all built or repaired boats, maybe somebody's built one of these.

Re: Horse Tack Trunk
a nice framed up trunk with woven cane for front, sides and back would be good, to let fresh air through also, especially if the blanket and such are stored there. I built one for Sonja and Sonseareythat doubled as a "sofa" because it had a pad for the top for sitting.Wakan Tanka Kici Un

Re: Horse Tack Trunk
Forum member Tim Whitten (Marlinespike.com) has a nice set of plans for a seachest and there was a nice article published in Woodenboat on a different design: note the correction by the article's author in the quotes below:
You are probably not going to believe this, but I stumbled (on) and filed away a copy of this yesterday:
It has a materials list, a scaled drawing and plenty of step by step instructions with pics ....
Seeing as how I wrote the article, I should point out that there is one minor error on the exploded view drawing. The drawing of the end panel shows 12 dovetail pins per side. There should be just 11 per side.
There is also a set of plans available for a square cornered version of the chest. Same base dimensions just vertical panels and the dovetails and pins on the square cornered version can be cut with a router and dovetailing fixture.

Here is a place you can get plans. Looks like a simple truck.

Thanks for the link on the Tack Plans. She rides English. We're currently using an old steamer trunk from the Chicago Worlds Fair. Nice trunk, but not what she wants."If a man speaks at sea where no woman can hear, is he still wrong?"Comment

Re: Horse Tack Trunk
I actually did build a tack box for a customer about 20 years ago. She gave me the dimensions she wanted and I sort of copied the design from a hundred year old carpenters chest I bought at an estate sale. (The carpenters chest had the original maker's union cards stapled inside the lid, dues for 6 months were 50 cents). Details are a little fuzzy after 20 years but the sides and top were 5/4 pine. It was pretty heavy.
I made some boxes for my daughters last year that were scale models of the same chest:

I was just perusing my favorite coffee table book. It is called Treasure Chests by Lon Schleining. Lo and behold it has a tack chest. On the outside it looks much like a traditional sea chest, with a skirt board around the bottom. Inside are several tills for the various horse accessories. The top is about 6 inches deep. with 3 partitions, and a plywood retainer with u-shaped cutouts for holding a blanket or other cloth items. It looks to be about 3 feet across, a little less than 2 feet deep and a little more than 2 feet high.

Re: Horse Tack Trunk
Made one last year for my daughter for XMAS out of Butternut. Some old fashioned style handles. Did not customize the inside because I wasn't sure how she wanted it. She never did tell me... And I was going to Stencil her horse's name on the lid but she didn't want that either.
Said daughter's "Feed Box" bed I built out of tongue/groove flooring.
