I built my boat some time ago its a Selway Highlander 16 strip version. With one thing and another it has not yet seen the water. Hopefully soon as I'm now jobless. Now to my question, when it's sunny the hull surface is nice and shiny but when it rains which we get a lot of here in the Emerald Isle it gets a cloudy appearance.

Sounds like your hull is reflecting the sky.

Sounds like amine blush with the epoxy. It used to happen to me with fishing rods I built. I would then clean the surface well with amonia/water and it would stop happening.
Martin, what material is the hull surface?

Cedar covered in woven roven and epoxy.

Pipe fitter is correct on the possibility of amine blush. I was of the impression that the hull was finished to a shiny solid color.

You can't leave that epoxy exposed to ultraviolet. It is imperative that you coat it with a UV blocker of some sort such as the varnish, other synthetic transparent or translucent topcoat, or paint of choice.

It has been covered with a varnash. I used a varnish called International Yacht Varnish purchased at a local hardwear store, it was an opened tin that was used on another job so was not fresh. If I have to remove the varnish how will I know for sure that i have reached the epoxy coat. If it is amine blush how can it be removed at this stage.
Martin, varnish will be much softer than the epoxy under it. It will also be yellowish and smell different. Shouldn't be too hard to remove. In fact, if there actually is blush under it, is probably ought to be falling right off by itself as not much sticks to blush, so I wonder aloud if the problem might not be in the varnish itself.

Jim. The varnish is a 1 part so if I remove it is there any benefit to using a 2 part version.Thank you for your replys. As usual this forum is a mine of information.

Ignore the aesthetics. Go put the boat in the water. Have fun.

I do not appreciate my post being editored by WBF. It was a thorough assessment of the problem. Obviously professional assessments aren't wanted here.
Goodby.

I don't know enough about the various varnishes and topcoats to say. I have used both traditional varnish recipies and two part polyurethanes but have never had the problem you describe. Wish I could be more help.
