Hi, I'm getting closer to launch date on my 20' Elver sailboat and was wondering what size cleats and chocks are appropriate for a boat of this size? The boat's design displacement is about 1500 lbs. I see in the catalog various sizes of cleats and chocks listed. Also for the chocks I realize when I'm at anchor the line will go through the chock, then chafe on the 1/4" or so wood before going over the side. I expect it will chafe and wear on the wood. Anything to do about that?
The boat can be viewed at web page (http://www.willmarsh3.net)
and click on "Elver".
Thanks in advance
Will.

Let the size of the lines you'll be using be your guide, me thinks.

You can use a piece of half oval at the edge to prevent chafe. Jamestown distributors sells it.

I've very much enjoyed watching your project.
Excellent site.
Thanks
Doug
I too have enjoyed watching your progress. I hope we have good boat building weather here in Huntsville this spring. When do you think that you will launch?

I'm looking at this Spring for sure. Maybe March. I'm slowly working through my final 12 point punch list. It's just amazing the amount of detail that goes into this kind of project.
I was able to do some epoxy when the weather got up to 50-60 for the high.
Thanks for the info, I'll look for the half ovals.
Will.
For half round chafe reducers I have found that bandsawing a piece of copper tubing of appropriate size lengthwise works quite nicely.
Also woven webbing sewn to form a sleave at the point of the chafe is effective.

Norm's rule on sizing cleats is about right.
No (wooden) mooring cleat on a boat this size should be less than nine inches long -- 12" would not be too big..
As to fairleads, some are made with a lip that wraps over the edge of the gunwale to protect the woodwork. Here's a small pair (starboard one on the left, seen from inboard, port on the right, from outboard) --

These look pretty good. Do you know a supplier for them?

Thad -- They are good-looking pieces, aren't they? That particular pair, along with some other bronze bits and pieces, went to a Sydney client last week as it happens. He's just finished one of David Payne's Rocks River Skiffs (below,) for which naturally enough he didn't want tacky placky or whatever. I've just had an email from him, in which he said in part, "The fittings are absolutely b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l !!, just what is necessary to finish of a classic skiff, I am delighted and very grateful for your . . . It is marvellous to know that there are still some good craftsmen that know how to do such classical bronze work. I had nearly given up to use the available chrome and plastic junk that is sold by the local ship chandlers . . . "
I love getting that sort of letter. smile.gif
Will -- I regret that protocol forbids my answering your question here, but if you care to let me have your email address I'll be happy to reply off-Forum.

While Mike can't say this, I don't think forum rules prevent me from saying that I'd guess the beautiful chocks in question come from Mike's business: Wooden Boat Fittings (http://www.woodenboatfittings.com.au) .

Hi Will, I'll email you the pictures of the cleats on my Elver. Unfortunately, the P.O. didn't use an open chock so they are a pain to use. Jim

Thanks, Bruce. I don't suppose Forum rules prohibit my agreeing with your supposition? smile.gif
Please check your email, Will.
