Oh boy. 12x12x12'

A proper post to follow this weekend when time isn't so pressing.

This will be used for our Cockle/Fox/Galena replica, for those who have been following my threads.

Must be the angle, its square - cameras do funny things.

There is no heart, or sap - Douglas fir.

Looks to be pretty well wrapped. Did you shake it to be sure there's a keel in there ?

I'm going to go look at some Osage Orange trees for a keel on my Concordia and I was wondering what defines the heart or sap wood of the tree? Is it a couple inches from the center for the heart? What about sap? Just wondering how big of tree I need to get the best keel and deadwood.

RAKA...I catch you anywhere near Webbers Falls and you get shot! The Bois d'Arc trees are gonna be hard to find in the size you want, and the one in grand dads front yard is the largest and oldest known out west of the Mississippi....it was one of Judge Parkers hanging trees....

I'll bring a tape measure and camera - it is west of the Mississippi - where does grand dad live?

What diameter would you guess I would need?

Hahaha. Yeah, there is a keel in there somewhere.

We are going to suck out as much usable material as we can with big circular saws doing wacky cuts and then adze and axe out the rest.

Fairing will likely be done with planes, draw knives, power plane and belt sander.

As far as sap, with Douglas Fir it is easy to see, as its white - we want the pink. The heart or pith is where the rings zero out at the center of the tree. The tree this came out of was big, but not huge by west coast standards.
