View Full Version : We Had a dramatic Monday...Send your good thoughts...

Rainbow, my beloved cat who has been with me since 1991 went to insulin shock twice yesterday. We got a new insulin for her and it almost killed her.

Took her to vets three times. Last time at 9 pm. Her glucose was 0.8. Had it gone down to 0 she would have been dead.

She got strong glucose administered intravenously. She still has the tubing (with two plugs) in her blood vein.

Spent about 5.5 to 6 hours in vet's offices plus 30 to 40 minute commute each time each way. Cass held her on her lap and tried to administer honey to her as I drove as fast as possible.

Rainbow's little body went into convulsions and...ooh....I'm getting tears into my eyes as I tell you this...It was horrible.

Spent all night awake, sitting on a lazy-boy chair with her on my lap. -Placing her gently on the floor every time she wanted to go and lifting her back up to my lap.

Her glucose is high again today, but that is better than the insulin shock.

Will keep the tube inside her blood vein another day or two in case she goes into a shock again...

Today she has eaten a bit and drunk a lot of water.

I'm going to go sit with her and give her my loving touch now.

That's terrible news. I hope Rainbow pulls through OK. It's just about a year since we lost Carmie, never did find out just what was wrong with him, even after 4K in vet bills.

17 Years is a good run. She's not immortal though. Come to peace with that, be thankful for what she's shared with you, and be prepared to let her go.

Best wishes and happy thoughts.

Thinking about you and Rainbow, Spinner!

It's a really difficult thing, but all the animal bodies wind down. 17 is a good run for a cat.

Nothing makes it easy. The finest words are chafe. When Bill put his dear Labrador down it broke his heart. He went into the yard, dug a hole, and put a bullet in her brain. It was all he could do. I admire him for being direct about it. Most people, myself included, hire an assassin.

Good luck, and I love cats, but don't expect too much. She's getting up in years. Kittens are fun.

Very sorry to hear what you are going through.

She's a pretty girl, Spin. I've known cats that lived well into their twenties, so hopefully this is just a bump in the road.

Was thinking this morning. I've lived with three cats in my adult life. All smart, all unique little beasts. Shadow was a little black boy cat. Sweet as a peach. Minnie was a tabby who came to me from the wilds, a feral I raised from three weeks. She earned the moniker "Meany." That kitty was just cantankerous, but she was so gorgeous you forgave her. You could well tell she came out of a line of feral stock, both by her coloring and her demeanor. The current one, Catawumpous, is somewhere in between. Her way too many toes earned her her name. She's a bit askew when she walks. Those extra claws are hell on the mice, I'll tell ya!:)

Honoring them, respecting their foibles, caring for them has been a great joy in my life. If you pay attention they teach you new worlds. May Rainbow continue to brighten yours.

Spin....I have ferrets, and that is a common disease with them. I keep Karo syrup (although you could make a simple sugar syrup) on hand. If one goes into shock or convulsions, rub some on the gums until you can get to a vet. I wish the best for your baby.

Hey Spin, give Rainbow a nice pat for us......

Like Rainbow, I've been down that road a few times myself (I'm a type I diabetic). It is no fun for me either, and even worse for my wife, since she has to see me through it. I feel for ya both! ;)

Hang in there, Spin, and Cass.

There's a 19 YO survivor of a Trans-Atlantic passage that allows us to share her house that has given us reason to construct her a traditional ship's cat 8-sided coffin in the past.

She pulled through, and the coffin sits under the workbench waiting for the inevitable.....

It's tough being mortal, some days.

You know, I never in my life thought that I would have a cat. I think that I feed 11 of them now. I do not claim to own any of them. Cats are most certainly not like dogs. They come and go, and we have had a couple leave for greener pastures, but more seem to come than go. Our eldest is about 20 (she's been with us for 18 years), and the youngest four are a couple of months old. Add them to the three crazy dogs and it is no wonder that for me the chance to get onto the water for some peace and quiet is my idea of heaven.

Spin, I am sending you and yours many good thought. May they arrive unhindered.

You are kind and caring people... I send you all a hug of appreciation from us.

More good vibes from CT Spinner . Rainbow will be all right.

11-06-2008, 01:08 PM
Thanks, we are taking her to the vet for blood test every day for now.

We are giving her one unit if insulin every morning. (Unit from 0.5 ml syringe)

She is very sensitive to it. Hopefully this will get her sugar levels normalized.

Thank you all again for your positive thoughts and well wishes...

Best hopes for you and Rainbow Spinner. It's awfully hard having a sick animal, you suffer right along with them, and you always second guess because they can't really articulate what they are feeling.
