Still another week before I put my Swede 55 away for the year, but today was nice, so we decided to go out for a sail.

Probably only 8-9 knots of wind, so we could have used a bit more power, but 7.7 isn't bad upwind.

We sailed out of Shelburne Bay, and around Juniper Island:

More coming...

We set the Spinnaker on a tight reach, and sailed back to the mooring. We were definitely strapped trying to carry the Spinnaker, but it's an Asym so it does pretty well.

Good speed, but we could have used more wind:

Nice to see something about sailing in here for a change, instead of politics. That looks more fun than what I did.

That brought back nice memories of sailing out of Burlington on the Friend Ship

Thanks for the comments.

A couple more:

Looking under the Spinnaker:

And starting to get some projection to windward as we head down. It takes concentrated work of both the driver and trimmer, but we are able project the kite way out in front and run pretty deep with good speed.

Great shots Noah, Mittens!!
That boat is fast alright.

You wouldn't catch me wearing mittens, but if my crew is I suppose that's ok. I don't have the guts to set the kite by myself yet, so I need them. When we set out at 9am it was around 35 degrees, but it got up to 40 or so. Still, with the wind there was a nip in the air.

Whats the set up with the lazy sheet in that first gennaker shot Noah?
or is that some kind of tweaker?

That's just the lazy sheet going to the clew. I "luggage tag" the two sheets onto a short 6ft light spectra end, so you only need to untie one knot on the spinnaker and it keeps the weight off the clew for light air performance.

We do inside jibes, meaning that the clew of the Asym goes inside the tack and in front of the forestay. Some folks do outside jibes where you pull the clew around the front of the spinnaker, but then you need some way to keep the lazy sheet from falling under the boat.

I'm still learning how to make her go in all conditions. Sometimes she's fast as hell, and other times I just can't make her go. The light stuff (4-7 knots) is still a challenge. She is very sensitive to rig tune and main trimming. Even up to 13 knots of wind speed we have a soft backstay, very soft forestay, with the trav up and the main eased off for twist.

The Whitehall is put away for the year, and I never really got to use the Lyman this summer. I'm eying getting the old I-14 into the shop for a rebuild, but it will have to be fast - a baby is on the way in Feb.

I still wish I had purchased one of Knud Reimer's wooden boats, but I haven't managed to find one that fits the bill just yet. This was as close as I could get. Still, 3 out of 4 are wood...

Good idea with the pendant. Last time I had my asym set was between 1 and 3 am on the 100 mile two hander we did and getting that projection was what we were concentrating on too. knocked off about 5 boats that had led us for 90 of the 100 too.;)
We get a cluster every inside we do.. not enough room between the forestay and asym tack... but then outside has its own challenges with the gear I have too.
Took the symetrics off the boat this weekend for summer and the gennaker stays for cruising now.
