Anyone know anything about Kit Africa? I thought he'd passed on, but on page 66, second paragraph of WB #205, he's mentioned in the present tense. His name pops up so often. What's he famous for? Wikipedia has nothing on him.

Have you tried the WB search functions?

Part of being a great sailor is being a great self-promoter, which Kit comes by honestly, inheriting from is father, Spike, President of the Pacific.

Ok, I've got my Africa's crossed. I'm trying to find out about Spike, not Kit.

Spike has passed on.
I suggest you call Kit if you want to learn bout Spike.
Kit lives in Port Townsend WA. I learned a bunch of rigging stuff from him when I went to boat building school there. He's very approachable.

Read Sterling Hayden's book, "Wanderer" if you are interested in the Africas. Spike took Wanderer from Sausalito to the South Pacific with Hayden and their kids. Kit went along with Spike. The book is a good read. Spike's been gone a fair while now. Kit was in Sausalito for a long while, but, as said, he apparently moved up North and is rigging. His old man was a hell of a rigger and fancywork artist, not to mention a bit of a character. These days, you'd be hard put to find a guy like Spike Africa in the sanitized, concrete dock, condo-marinas that have replaced the old working waterfronts.
