Well it started Saturday with a "test fly" of the new-to-me / loaner spinnaker, but first, for Todd Bradshaw, a shot of my absolutely perfect mainsail :D It's so perfect it looks painted on!

(You know, it's a wonder sailors don't have more neck problems...)

Don and Davis Murray (if the name sounds familiar, check your last issue of Cruising World or my posts about a year ago when Davis set up Sarah's mast).

The first three pictures are from Saturday, which was nasty and overcast, but Sunday was a sunny day designed especially by God to drop the most beautiful golden light on my beautiful boat. :)

Going out the cut was a little rough

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec52291a0d2e300000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

but my beautiful girl just sang :)

On the other hand, as gallons of water poured over the bow, I was regretting my decision to remove a loose vent on the foredeck, which although seemed like a good idea at the dock, again made me question which two brain cells ganged up to make that decision... :(

OK, enough about us. The club photographer, Janet McNabb, was aboard the committee boat and the following are her pictures.

Pre-start, after we changed out the tiller bolt while underway, but that's another story...

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec522dfbbd2df00000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec522ead5923300000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

And no, I'm not happy with the mizzen sail :(. We never really got it right and I don't know if it's us (which I doubt considering the experience and caliber of the crew [David-Steve-Don]) or if it's the sail. It was a hand-me-down from another Concordia owner, and I'm not convinced it fits exactly right and/or I may have something set up wrong. Don, naturally, is ready to build me a new one, which is the direction I'm going...

OK, back to the regularly scheduled pictures...

We're in the starting sequence here, dueling with the C&C. The line is running from the sea buoy to the committee boat where the photographer is working from:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec5223701d21100000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

A couple of runs back and forth:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec522c39053ca00000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

And we nailed it :D

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec52365e373a600000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

Don is a master at the helm, I'm no slacker on the count, and Steve runs the sails and calls traffic. I think all season (+/- 18 races on various boats) we blew one start and were a little late on another, but we've pretty much got it down. With David Gage in the pit, we had a fourth good body, and it worked well.

We didn't accelerate fast enough to suit Don, but we nailed it!

See ya! Ya quarter-million-dollar red bucket of FRP :p

We held him for a while. I guess David didn't get any shots  but we held off our new nemesis for a while.

I even went up on the bow and did the "I'm the king of the world" scene from Titanic :D

Then, well, he points a bit higher, and there he went :(

Fast forward three rough and bouncy hours and here we come to the finish...

Don's on the helm, Steve is flying the chute, I'm flying the mizzen staysail, and David is running everything else:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec5237751f22d00000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec523ae0833b000000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec522002a92b900000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/

It was really choppy - especially when we got in close to the surf, and incredibly hard to keep the spinnaker flying.

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec522002a92b900000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/

One from our perspective:

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec523b50af21700000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

And of course... right at the line....

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec52200df137c00000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/

(If you put your ear up to the screen here, you can hear the cussing from the foredeck...)

Concordia...41

My beautiful girl back at the dock

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8ce06b3127ccec5234d8d73dc00000040O08BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

I'm smiling, but the fine print on the trophy is a VERY disappointing third place. If they gave points for style, we'd of had it hands down ;)

Just for effect, here's a "before" picture (5/23/08). You'll notice in the "before" picture the mizzen was the pick of the litter... -

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8db07b3127ccec460f01a227800000100O38BYtG7lsxbg9 vPhA/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D3/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/

So that was:

Before another Concordia owner gave me two headsails;

Before my patron saint got Sarah a new roller furling;

Before Don measured her for the new main;

Before the new boom ...

Speaking of songs, another theme here should be "I get by with a little help from my friends..." - make that A LOT of help from my friends ... :)

Did Todd cut that main? Man is that nicely shaped!

No, it's not Todd's work. I don't know if he's doing anything that size. It's just that when we got it and I first posted pictures Todd was extremely complimentary, and we all know what it means when Todd Bradshaw compliments your sail shape. :)

My friend, crew mate, and local UK Halsey connection, Don Stagg, did the measuring and design, and the sail was made in the USA by Pedro Gianotti of UK-Halsey Texas.

Well, since you're nice enough to insist ;) :o - these just landed in my in-box.

These were taken just post-spinnaker set by the blue Hunter that was our nemesis in cruising class. (Moving into performance class allowed us to fly the spinnaker and mizzen staysail.)

That had to be one of the funnest sails ever. As part of the performance fleet we started 15 minutes after the cruising fleet. By the first mark, 5 miles to wind on a buckin' sea, we had past 3 and rounded to pass the others. Only 1 cruising class boat beat us:D

Here is a little vid of the beats to wind...

You don't use a spinnaker pole?

Concordia...41
10-28-2008, 06:26 PM
You don't use a spinnaker pole?

Spinnaker poles are a subject of debate right now and I just got yelled at (again) :(.

Apparently there are various opinions on the subject  ;)

John B
10-28-2008, 07:09 PM
Great photos Margo , she's looking the business all right.
You're not going to need a pole for an asymetric which is what I assume you'll want to get first. Just stay asym and run the angles. Flat running and symetric with pole means a hell of a lot more string and cluster ,er , potential for problems. And big crew numbers.

Maybe set up a lightish pole for poling out the jib.

Concordia...41
10-28-2008, 07:14 PM
John - that was pretty much what was just ... um... er.... emphasized ;) to me.

Again, just for effect... it was exactly a year ago (October 27th) that we got her back in the water. :)

Top, bottom, nuts, bolts... it's been a good year. :D

Clinton B Chase
10-28-2008, 07:23 PM
I sailed with friends who flew a symmetrical spin without a pole and with the sheets through the genoa track...the sheet led through the gate in the life lines. I was amazed how well this set up work. They think the need for a pole is a commercial move to get people to spend money on them and on assymetricals. We were able to sail very deep on a reach and quite high.
