The block of flats on my H28

An $80.00 sabre saw (demolition saw) and 3 to 4 minutes later:

One little bight sized piece before dinner, the rest will come off tomorrow arvo. At the moment, after getting rid of the cabin top, I'm planning on leaving the deck framing in place, depending on its condition.

Interestingly, by the look of the cabin sides when I stripped them down, the original cabin looks to have been a single level throughout, similar to the original H28 design. I do know it was raised for the previous owners 6' something grandfather but didn't know the original shape.

You've just gotta love a cheap sare saw!!:D

I hope you had an audience mate. We stopped the whole boatyard when we took the chainsaw to Grantala and took out the last 6' of deck and the entire transom. They all came down to watch.

So - we put it all back together in about 17 days IIRC. There's your target - 17 days.....

It definitely looks better btw.

No, no audience mate, it was a lovely private moment between me and "no name", she gave it up so willingly that I felt guilt just doing that little bit.

17 days? Not much chance of that, I'm hoping to be back in Darwin this weekend (or next) for another six months. No, this is strictly a five year or so project - no false expectations here mate, I just wanted to be able to go back knowing that I'd made a start. Also it will make it easier to get some humidity into her to hopefully stop the strip planks drying out and splitting along the glue lines.

I watched Ross Gannon attack the backbone around the centerboard trunk of the first Canvassback with a chainsaw modified to cut ferrous metals as well as wood.

Courage.

Mananaged to put half a day into the H28 today and finished getting rid of the block of flats. Surprisingly the cabin sides turned out to be huon pine, though snotted with glass all over, so although I've hung on to most of it I'm not sure whether the effort of stripping it will be worth it. Interestingly the glass hasn't bonded terribly well to the ply decks and most of the huon pine, so it may not be too hard. Time will tell.

Still need to rip up the decks, hopefully without damaging the frames, also need to get stuck into the cockpit but will go a little more cautiously there to see what I can save while openeing it up a bitmore.

This is a diorama pic from the phone so am sorry about the quality:

The diorama setting has distorted the cockpit a bit on this one:

Had a bit of a scribble on the deck - black texta - to mark in roughly the size of the new cockpit and new position of the coamings:

It may pay to put a temporary beam or two across that grand canyon to stop things moving too much over time

Yes, 'agree absolutely, she's gonna' be sitting there for a while, actually I bolted a length of pine in amidships just after taking the pic's.

The "block of flats" as you called it was totally disguising that lovely hull and sheer. Big improvement!

Thanks gents, when I was pulling her apart I could see where the "flats" had been added, the builder had glassed over the join so it looked like it had always been there but in fact I think she may have originally been single level the full length per the Herreshoff design. Though she would stilll have been very "boxy" as there wasn't much art at all involved in the shaping of her cabin tops.

As of yesterday I think I've managed to source some Honduran Mahogany for the cabin sides, fingers crossed if I do manage to get hold of that (at the right price) I'm using Jay's "Bright Star" as the bench mark. I figure that if I can get "no name" looking half as good as "Bright Star" she will still be the belle of the ball here.

not sure about the interior yet. She never had the pilot berth set up as designed but now that she's gutted I have a blank canvas to play with. I've been collecting pics' of H28 interiors and I hope to end up with close to the original but with some interesting innovations and best use of space.

Let's see, how many years am I into Phoenix - let's see, Finbar's gone deaf, arthritis bother's him, SWMBOjr has finished college, I've had to reinvent myself, a party I was depending on didn't, etc.

"You can't always tell from where you're sitting to how far it is to where you're going to be." Aunt Dot.

Nice set-up, and a great improvement. One does have to wonder where the inspiration comes from to 'improve' inspired designs, LOL.

Nice touch Ed, is that your theme song? I might have to adopt it.

I don't think I could possibly improve on LGH's inspired design but I do hope to take the previous owners uninspired adaptation of it back as close to that original inspiration as I can. Any innovations are aimed at the use of space below for stowage, galley, nav' area, bunks etc. Electronics will be absolutely minimal (maybe a compass with a light?)

You've made good use of your weekend this time! Sometimes you just have to get in there and "de-previous-owner-ize" your project. What a stellar improvement!
