They voted to extend their jobs for another term, along with the mayor's, overruling two public referendums limiting terms.

That's half right.

They voted they could all run for election to another term. In NY, the public (the one's who had the mentioned referendums) get to vote in those elections.

And when you say it like that, it makes me wonder why they bothered......
Bloomberg has said he needs to stick around because of his financial connections and expertise. Of course those same links may be a good reason to kick him out.

In Michigan, the state legislature is two-term limited, after which they retire with a pension and health care. There were something like 20 running for one seat in this district. (three terms for the state reps)

A proposal to stop some of this included reducing the number of judges. The judges refused to put it on the ballot, ruling it unconstitutional
