Hm. That surgery back aft is not going to be any fun. I wonder too about her framing otherwise. I worked on a mid-fifties Southwester Junior that was framed with red oak in the bent frames. What a royal mess.

Would anybody here buy a 35 foot wooden boat on ebay for much more than a salvage price? You'd need some pretty good inside dope to do otherwise, don't you think?

Do the poor bidders know about the severe case of cancer and the $20 or 30 grand needed to fix it?

20 or 30 might be what someone else would charge. If you did it yourself this work wouldn't cost anywhere near that much. She's a nice boat, mahogany planking, good pedigree (Sparkman and Stephens design). I wonder what the reserve is.

She's a nice boat, mahogany planking, good pedigree (Sparkman and Stephens design). With a great deal of quality work done to her just before the discovery of the problem with her horn timber. Its a shame for Uncas to be sitting out in the weather going on two + years now.

Interesting no one here is going for her...

You just can't buy a large wooden boat without knowing what you'll be getting into. I don't believe they just turned down their best offer, but any sleuthing around at all would have to make someone suspicious of what they might be getting into. The listing was particularly uninformative as well. They got exactly what they deserved, and it didn't cost anybody anything. Perfect!

It costs the seller a listing fee every time...
and I've been looking for "my" boat for a long time, and sellers just keep on dreaming about selling at a very high price, they have not realized that the market has changed so they just relist hoping some sucker will come along and bite.

I don't really get the feeling that they are interested in selling her for less than the $15,000.00 that they have listed for on their homepage, unless the purchaser is willing to finance the repair work to be done by their students...

I'm not saying it's an unworthy project, but it is a project. Someone remind us what work has been done previously? Has she, for example, been refastened? That may have addressed other framing issues, but maybe not. I would want to know what she's framed with. The difference between red and white oak is significant, and the builder did use red sometimes.

A long chat with Jamie, if he ever shows up again, would be a good idea. He knows the boat

Taking two days and having a real good poke at the fabric would be in order. If you don't know what you are looking for hire someone who does. It's not cheap and even a good survey will miss problems, but someone who knows the type will catch the big ones.

Hell, her fittings are worth $2100 dollars.

I want to correct any impressions I may have left. Uncas is almost certainly worth more than $2100, especially as we have all been privy to her story. What I am trying to express is that you can't offer a boat on e-bay and expect a fair selling price when she needs an unspecified amount of work. If Uncas cost $1,000 or 10,000 is probably irrelevant if you want to do or contract the work for that particular design. For anybody who doesn't have the skill or the will to do that but likes the boat, a lot of research is in order.
I think ebay is great for some things, but wooden cruising classics isn't one of the items I'd want to buy off a listing or a casual (or even pointed) conversation with the owner who lists it "as is, where is, no warranty."

I would not bid for than a few grand ... to be sure!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the boat ... but still.

Anybody care to enlighten me as to the large manhole cover in the cockpit? What does it access. Thanks in advance for your help.

StevenBauer

There is engine compartment access through that hatch, Joe, but I don't think the engine is in there anymore. I don't think it is original, the original one was smaller.

Wouldnt the engine be a lot forward of that? ... maybe over the top of the reduction gear...
That is a water tight hatch and when removed, you have access to the top or the rudder and steering gear.
Jami probably kept the bacon in there...

That boat is a good deal for someone..... Jamie never did any work himself, and Hinckley gave him a couple of large bills I think. That boat is very restoreable... Jamie just got bored of her, and wanted a bigger hole in the water to pour money into.
