Mr. Fleming, I really don't see what all the fuss was about. Folks will pull information useful to them from a thread and ignore the rest. I read a lot and post little here.
If you really want to stick with boatbuilding tradition, then I guess you need to stay in the shop and wait for the timid apprentice to approach you to absorb your body of knowlege.
If you want to use this "new tool", the internet forum, then you gotta put up with some of the noise in the signal to noise ratio.
God knows others have been very guilty in the past of re directing googe and ply topics and hijacking the threads to extole the virtues of traditionalism.
Some (and you know who you are) were particularly harsh in dealing with the googe and ply group.
But no one's going to successfully keep any thread here completely on track, and we all gotta realize that.
Now back to my design for the "Robert Cleek" its a tortured ply design executed in OSB bright finished, complete with agency stamp. She'll be a beut I'm sure smile.gif Alternative name would be chippiecanoe smile.gif
Peace
John

"I read a lot and post little here."
I guess that's a pretty good definition of your contribution to the forums.

And this is a sample of yours Donn, to a guy who wanted to make a fancy foredeck hatch for his Chrissy:

Let's see..."silk purse/sow's ear?"...it's only a CC, Peter...try to relax.

Hey, John, tiz good to know you are still about. Sparhawk completed his CottonWould, and a dandy craft it is complete with a blue tarp sail. You gotta quit threatening and get Chippycanoe going.
A map of expected spring precititation in today's paper has your piece of the country drying up while we may get a little above average. Ya gotta plan on hitting a Boats-of-Wood meeting one of these seasons.

Sometimes, reading this forum, it amazes me how you people got all the way across the Atlantic in 1492 without killing each other.
On the other hand, maybe that explains what happened when you got here! :D

Oh Mr. Roger, you see a long time ago when the dear white man sat foot on this land, the ingun gave him funny tobacco to smoke in peace, my friend. Study your history. This kept funny skin in check. ;) :D

(Apologies to John, this is definitely noise in the signal  )
History, Dear Mr. Oyster, as you know, belongs to the victor. And considering, by your own admission, that the victors were stoned, who ya gonna believe ;)

And the schedule would be for public or private viewing?
Yes Mike, maybe the special taxed weed would be better than the flaming firewater the injuns made from the fancy colored corn and shared to some here at nightfall. ;)
And Ed, don't be bringing "Bingo" up here. ;)
Personally, I would never build or repair a boat named Soapbox. Can you imagine if white man's history recorded the crossing of the Atlantic by the Nina, the Pinta, and the Soapbox? Its just wrong!! :D

Wouldn't that be a funny sight to see in the WB Launchings? A square-sided, chipboard, googe-caulked, tarp-sailed, latex-painted soapbox named the Robert Cleek?
I believe he'd enjoy the joke. Then he'd buy the thing just to burn it!

Make that, Roger Bin There, Done That, Got the Wooden Boat Forum T-Shirt To Prove It!
Sorry, John. I've never hijacked a thread before, and I regret doing it to yours. Guess all the absurdity on these pages lately is making me feel silly.

oops I stand corrected, Since the Robt. Cleek is still only a design proposal, this thread should be under Designs/ Plans.
Once construction begins, I guess I could re post here. smile.gif
BTW I love the conceptual rendering of the soapbox, but it looks like it is traditionally planked, not tortured OSB as per the specs.
Donnnnnn.. I also read my woodenboat cover to cover most months, and have yet to write an article for it. I guess my contribution to WB is my subscription fee which also underwrites this forum, and I feel like that gives me the right to lurk when I wanna and post when I have the time, or something to say.

John,
Great post. Funny stuff. Probably 95% of the forum doesn't contribute very often, but we learn quite a bit. I also just get inspired to keep at it on my project by listening to everyone talking boats. Some people could contribute to the forum by NOT posting. (i.e. misc.)

I must apologize for the above concept picture. It appears that in my haste to get this done and posted, I forgot and left the fender dragging.
It will not happen again.

Good grief, Ken. Now I'm shocked at your carelessness. Here I thought that was an anchor rode. tisk tisk.

This thread has no business being in Building/repair. Take your banter to misc. where it belongs. There are a # of folks here that want to stay out of these types of threads. Please refrain from "watering down" the Building/repair section with this type of posting.

I will defer to your low member number, and somewhat agree, but the thread was clearly titled and easily avoided.
And I also added the plausible deniability of my proposed design, which I actually did attempt to build one summer out of spite, but found that 1/4 inch acx ply tortured so much more effectively than the osb.
I ended up with a rather nice looking canoe out of the deal which can be viewed at my web site, which has moved since I logged my profile. If I can figure out how to edit it, you can all see that Son of a Chip does indeed exist as a fer real wooden boat.

Now go have a tall cool one on me and lighten up.
ahh got my new profile updated with valid e-mail and pointer to the new location of my home pages full of cardboard, and ply and googe boating.
