Ive got plans from the shoestring shipyard to build the Frugal skiff 12'. Has anyone here built one. It will be my first build. Plans look straight forward. Will a 5hp outboard work on her?

Will a 5hp outboard work on her?Yes but she won't go very fast with such a small engine.

Thats ok.. She'll be a marina tender... I thought 5 was big for a 12ft skiff. What can she rate?

Since the boat won't plane with such a small engine, its speed will be whatever the calculated 'hull speed' is for a boat her length, give or take 1-2 mph. My guess would be about 7 mph ... and if this is correct she will run at this speed with only 1-2 HP ... so you won't be over-revving that 5 HP engine, instead it will probably be idling most of the time.

If my calc's are right hull speed is aprox 4.4mph. So she should plane easyly with a 5hp. my 10ft zodiac does 14mph per my gps with the same 5hp.

dont sell your plans and false hopes for the lyskiff dreamer, change your 1988 outdated website and attitude sir not all of us started out so you

that is a very nice looking skiff. I am, however, a little confused. Was it the guy who sold you the plans who was a jerk?

So what did it cost to build?

Would you be interested in selling me the same plans?

Havent have any dealings with the guy. It was another poster. I guess he must have called him.
