The recently posted pictures of Iceland make me think that some of you may like these. We were aboard the Polar Star in late August, a former icebreaker converted for expedition cruises. Started in Spitzbergen, thence to East Greenland at about 78 north, south to Scorsby Sund, ending in Rekjavik. Stunning beyond belief.

A nod to the sponsor: the remains of a boat at a Danish research station destroyed by the Germans in 1942 or thereabouts

Spent a year in Greenland in the mid-fifties at Sondrestrom AFB located about 60 miles above the arctic circle. Have always wanted to go back there during a summer. My friends and I did a lot of hiking in the area between the base and the ice cap. Many beautiful flowers growing in the tundra and large wild high bush blueberries on eastern and southern slopes. One memorable experience was being transported out onto the ice cap by helicopter on a calm spring day and when left there realizing that there was no sound, absolute silence. Will never forget the first sighting of Greenland from the air. (Perhaps 16000 feet in a piston engine aircraft) It was June, evening, light. It looked like a large white frosted cake with chocolate fringe. Closer in it was a bright green. Beautiful
