As some would know Im going through a few issues down here which hopefully will be sorted sometime in the early new year... at which point I will be starting a new life.

Now over the last few weeks Ive been starting to try to look at my options in this vein...

One of those options is to come up there for a visit for awhile... now thats optimistic enough most would say BUT heres where I kick optimistic right up the proverbial clacker a good heft blow!!

Im thinking of buying a boat when I arrive... since buying there I would get more boat for my buck and a better deal to go with it... anyway aside from thinking of such as this...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE REMEMBER this is going to take a few months IF it comes to fruition... so these are just a couple I know are for sale that I am taken with and thus are NOT to be taken that Im going to buy one or the other... just as an example of my present thinking on this option
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

40' Concordia 39 Yawl

* Boat Name: MEMORY
* Year: 1955
* Current Price: US$ 35,000

Margo you could be a great help if I go this particular direction! ;)

or thus...

34' Frank Loud Auxiliary Cutter

* Boat Name: FULL MOON
* Year: 1977
* Current Price: US$ 36,000

That would be the upside of the budget for this thought...

As Im just starting to round out this particular option Im asking the question early (old scout motto... be prepared :cool: ) does anyone have any idea of the legal and or coast guard requirements of purchasing such a boat if your not an American citizen?

And no its not a definant yet just looking at options!!!

Cheers

It's just fine with the coast guard.....problem would be that a boat like that would require some extensive work, also a considerable amount of money to outfit for sea....it will take a bit of time, as a guest or visitor travelling on a toooorist visa the INS might be the one to get a bit upset.
Whatever the boat costs you, be prepared to spend at least that in maintenance and goods for going to sea.....you need a sextant and navigation materials, survival gear etc....we're not as bad as NZ for going offshore but the coast guards does get upset sometimes. I would opt for a smaller boat.
If you're serious, consider something 30-32 feet, glass fibre, and then work on it......

Thanks Chuck :cool: ...somehow I just knew you would say that! :D

You still maintain going smaller than 35ft?... mmm okay will look around a bit down here but cant see me getting as good a buy here as up there but as I say early days yet so who knows?

Shane, I ain't no Margo but a 35K Concordia is years away from sailing. Note photo not current. That said you could be a real asset to the sailing community no matter what boat. The docks and pubs around Newport are chock full of Aussies, and the reputation is high.
In regards to a Concordia I'd look for one that is cosmetically healthy with an ironsick bilge. Because big stuff is easier to fix than the small stuff. I can also speak to living aboard while restorating; not for a sane man, ipsofacto be willing to sacrifice a bit...:)
Come on up the shipwright trade could use your talents wherever you choose to ply your trade.

Also Shane.....
My old 31 was enough for two.....a modern 31 footer will have more room for extended offshore, the winches will be less and smaller, you really don't need anchor handling equipment, the engine requirements are much, much less. A two burner cooker works well and a dutch oven works on top.....water in tanks and also jugs for offshore.....stop procrastinating.......sell the house.....tell the kids after the fact........'cause they are gonna tell mom immediately....tell them you're gonna go walkabout for a while and will be gone for 2-3 months. Learn to celestial navigate....use nothing that requires batteries.
