Fitz's First Political Post In The Bilge:

I'm just gonna throw this out there, but I'm reading a book about Teddy Roosevelt and his exploration of the Amazon after he was president and after his run for a 3rd term. He even impressed Indian tribes with his drive and leadership.

So where are the Leaders these days?

Instead, we are stuck with some Old Guy (decorated and with guts, I'll give him that) a beauty queen, and the Democratic candidate that obviously can't be elected if Al Gore wasn't.

So, Where ARE THE LEADERS???

I just wish there was someone to vote for besides Micky Mouse.

I know, complaining in the Bilge will get you nowhere, but just imagine a candidate finishing his speech with a bullet in his or her chest........(teddy did this).

Does Fitz know that Senator McCain imagines himself to be another Teddy Roosevelt? Does Fitz care? We don't know, this is his gasp first Ohmygod political post in the bilge. You're doomed me boy, doomed.

. . . Senator McCain imagines himself to be another Teddy Roosevelt. . .

Probably the only thing Senator McCain has in common with TR is a love of military adventurism.

Roosevelt's speech before the National Progressive Party Convention 1912 (http://www.ssa.gov/history/trspeech.html)

McCain is no Roosevelt.

I only do this for paddlers.

In Roosevelt's day being president was not of the scale of today's presidnt.
When a president ( I think it was Roosevelt) sent a message to J.P. Morgan asking him to come by for a chat Morgan replied with something like,"Have your man speak with my man. That should do it".
Being president today isn't that much of a plum. A big time exec can take over a company, run it into the ground in short order and walk away with $20-$150 million. Why indulge in the vagueries of politics and have people sifting thru' everything you ever did or said when you can reap big money and spend your last 30 years meandering around warm, gated places shmoozing with folks like yourself?
And there is another possibility. Voters may not be looking for a leader. They may be looking for someone they would like to have as a buddy. Or someone they think would go to their church. Or someone they think has exactly the same values they.
It just my opinion but I think the above was what Karl Rove used to keep Dubya in office for eight years.
Sorry there are no candidates who can knock you off your feet. You will have to put your thinking cap on and puzzle it out. Nobody ever said being an American would always be easy.

ps
There was a musical called "1776". It was about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In one of the early scenes the chorus sings

Sit down,John
Sit downJohn
For God's sake, John, sit down!

They were singing to John Adams. The song was historically correct. John Adams, for all his accomplishments, was never well liked. He was pedantic and not inclined to give in.
It didn't hurt him or us, did it?
