There's 10-20 times as much traffic on the ham bands tonight.....I have taken 67 messages in the last hour and a half, all using CW, for forwarding to folks relatives in about 20 states. The phone lines seem to be down or jammed up and at least two of the guys are running on mobile hf units from vehicles as their house power is already down.
Guess I may be up as long as I can hold out. Have copied a couple of really bad ones out of Haiti and some very very bad ones out of Cuba needing medical supplies at a makeshift dispensary. At least I can resend the messages for the most part on the internet.......:(

This is the great thing about Hams. They are they to help others in times of disaster. This is a great thing you are doing. Thank you! :)

Radio traffic ain't good.....Turks and Caicos totally shut down, both primary stations that I was handling traffic for out of Galveston have had to shut down due to batteries failing and no more gas in vehicles to charge the batteries. I have set schedules with a couple of guys running absolutely low power as I can still copy them through the noise....I'm going to try to sleep for a while.....

And it's the real reason the ITU grants us access to our bands.

Hurricane Nets Active on SSB for Ike (Sep 12, 2008) -- ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X reminds all contesters to please be mindful of the situation in Texas and the Gulf Coast region this weekend; Hurricane Ike is currently slated to land near Houston early Saturday morning. "This weekend is the ARRL September VHF QSO Party, Worked All Europe (SSB), the North American SSB Sprint, the Arkansas QSO Party, as well as several other radio events," Kutzko said. "Please keep in mind that there will be Net operations going on in the upper portions of 80, 40 and 20 meters for the affected Gulf Coast area in the path of Hurricane Ike. If you find yourself being asked to change frequencies because you're on a Net for Hurricane Ike operations, please cooperate. Do your part to keep Net operations free of interference during this critical time."
