Besides becoming a grandfather (Way Cool !... and I prefer to be called G-Daddy...I'm way too young to be called grandpa), and a bunch of boating and swimming. I'd have to say one of the coolest things I did this summer, surprisingly was going to a Renaissance Fair. I always thought those things were for really pale odd types, but I was really suprised at how much I enjoyed it. It was worth the price of admition just to watch all the different people dressed in all manor of costumes they had everything from armored knights to fairies, barberians, pirate wenches, and I even saw Braveheart. I'd have to say my favorite event of the day (next to the joust) was when my two boys had a sword fight...Thats right...a sword fight. They were suited up in real actual armor, each given a fencing sword (Then a short training course), a balloon was attached to each of their helmets, and the object was to pop the balloon on your opponents head ,the best three out of five rounds determins the champion. Austin(10 yr) won the first round, Forest (15 yr)won the second round, then austin, then forest, then there was a draw, then Austin took the last round to become the victor. I mean how many places can people walk around drinking beer and carrying swords ,and you can let your kids go at each other with swords and no one gets hurt...man that was alot of fun !

So...what was the highlight of your summer ?

My summer consisted of herding contractors and sub-contractors through a pretty extensive remodel of about 1,000sf of my house. Here are a few random pics:

This is one of two 16' beams which were assembled in place. Each one consists of 4 layers of 13-ply 10" x 1.75" glue-lam, sandwiching 2 layers of 2-ply 5/8" steel, all through-bolted. This one is replacing a former bearing wall which was removed to turn two old rooms into one large one. The other beam bridged a 24' span of 2x10 ceiling rafters which had no previous central support, and was holding up not only the second floor, but 3" of plaster, metal lath and copper radiant heat pipes.

More glue-lam. These are several of the 15 new door headers we installed.

New bay window with copper roof and brickwork foundation. When the weather cools, I'll experiment with whitewashing the brick to match the rest of the house.

New front entry. This entry used to be two separate front doors, flanking the porch. We replaced the old doors with windows, and installed a fiberglass Jeldwin doorset, gel-stained in mahogany. Previous aluminum siding was replaced with brickwork, which also awaits whitewash. I particularly like the way the mason 'toothed in' the new brick with the old, on the far left.

The kick board under the door will have a temporary piece of plastic wood, stained to match, until we figure out how we want to treat the porch.

I beat our acre of jungle back to a less scary state. Made some gardens for SWMBO. Sold an aluminum boat, bought a wood boat. I have now officially become a God as far as barbeque goes and I drank a lot of cold beer.
