I am on a short fuse to try to service and start the motor described in the title on Monday, Labor Day. It is in a 1959 Stephens Brothers Farallon Clipper 38 that a group is considering acquiring.

I know I can buy manuals, etc. online. And I located a service shop that works on these engines. But can anyone tell me what impeller, oil and fuel filters this engine would use?

Thanks.

Between 1939 and 1958 Gray Marine produced eight different four cylinder marine engines.

All engines used SAE 30 weight oil.

The Gray Marine manual shows two types of water pumps, a fresh water pump with a cast-iron impeller and a raw water pump with a six fin Sherwood neoprene impeller. For the neoprene impeller just compare the size/configuration of your impeller with the outlines shown on page 702-703 of the 2008 West Marine catalog. Any marine supply store will have a similar chart.

Thanks.

I tried to cover the spread by getting a gallon of 15-40 and one of 30 weight.

I guess I will get a look at the impeller Monday if the engine does not spit water when we try to start it. A picture or two against a ruler should do the trick to figure out which one to buy if I cannot come away with it.

I will try to photograph and note all identfying numbers on the engine so I can figure out exactly which engine it is.

Thanks for the great info!
