View Full Version : Crooked mast

I'm working on finishing my lug-rigged Penobscot 14. Stepped the mast today to see how everything fits, and noticed it cants towards the port side a couple of degrees. The mast looks straight, but I suspect the hole I bored in the mast partner is off line with the mast step. Do I need to build a new mast partner? If this won't affect the sailing charactertics very much, I'm tempted to chalk it up as a beginner's goof as I'm anxious to get the rig finished. I'm looking for just having a little fun on the water, not the ultimate in sail performance.
Thanks for your thoughts/advice.

I certainly wouldn't lose any sailing time to fix it.
Make believe it's deliberate. You do sail to windward more on the port tack, don't you? ;)

Does the heel of the mast have a tenon? if so it's easy to shave a bit off one side of the tenon and put it on the other.

Great idea! Yes, the mast heel has a 3/4" square tenon. Trimming and shimming the heel will be a whole lot easier than making a new partner. I'll get it done this weekend, assuming we're not dodging a hurricane. Thanks for the advice.

Mate, the mast of a lug rig always has a slight can't, to allow for the sail being on one side. Nice work.
