The Prowlers have been practicing carrier landings now second day in a row. Last time they did a lot of practicing was just before we went into Iraq.
If this keeps up Ill bet money something is about to happen.

Aw, Jeez, here we go again.

I asked my 18 year old son last night about his dreams and aspirations. He said he really didn't have any, since the world was basically going to hell in a handbasket. Sad, for someone so young to be so cynical about the state of the world.

Nihilism is typical of the young, not of the old :-) Teenagers are also not always prone to discuss their dreams and aspirations with parents.

But, yeah, that culture of fear you see everywhere -- it has a price.

That is sad.... the last time I head that was in 1964, just before I got put into the Canoe Club... I felt exactly the same way. Why Bother? Seemed to become the theme song of the late 60's... "we're going down the tubes anyway and won't survive, so why sweat it?"

Only... we did survive, didn't we ?

And while I got myself out of that headset and into a "let's do something for someone else" frame of mind, there was always the nagging little section of brain [that remembered hearing the fire sirens go off in the '50's and wondering if "this was it ?"] STILL telling me that no matter what we tried, it wouldn't make any difference.

I'm starting to sound like Ish, here, but the upshot is I'd hate to see that sort of defeatist crap being inculcated into the kids today... it damn near ruined me.

Stand down!

With our postures in the middle and far east the last thing we need is for Russia to move aggressively in Europe.

Stranger things have happened.

Wow! How depressing.

My 18 year old son is excited about starting college in another week and a half. He wants to be a writer. He's truly optimistic about his life.

I doubt the russians or Iranians read this.

Anyway its probably nothing. They practiced everyday for weeks prior to Iraq. This has only been 2 days in a row. But then they haven been doing this in a long long time.

Prowlers arent aid planes though.

EA-6B Prowler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EA-6_Prowler)

Designed for carrier and advanced base operations, the Prowler is a fully integrated electronic warfare system combining long-range, all-weather capabilities with advanced electronic countermeasures. A forward equipment bay and pod-shaped fairing on the vertical fin house the additional avionics equipment. It is the United States Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy)'s (USN) and the United States Marine Corps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps)'s primary electronic warfare aircraft. The primary mission of the aircraft is to support strike aircraft and ground troops by interrupting enemy electronic activity and obtaining tactical electronic intelligence within a combat area.

There is a rumour I have yet to confirm that gunboats have inflicted heavy damage to the Moskva in the Black sea.
The gun boats were firing Malakhit missiles and were very effective.
I lost the Ukraine station I was hearing and I haven't seen anything on the web.
Things are getting hot as the Ukrainians are under the thought that they are next.

Not to spoil your fears:rolleyes: but it's just normal FCLP practice , yes a fleet squadron is more than likely getting ready to deploy. FCLP practice has to be some many hits ,(approach's), day and night, within 10 days or so of hitting the boat. Then so many (X number) of cats and traps once they get to the boat before the cruise starts / ship can deploy.

I don't remember all the exact #'s but FCLP's are a PITA for everyone, the night time hits cause many late night's for the night check maintainers. As they generally have to fix any broke dick aircraft before they secure, or at least have parts on order to repair them before they secure.

They have two shifts , days and as we called it STAYS. Day check /night check . Or STAY check

Many nights I greeted the day checker guys , and yes at the time in a fleet squadron they all where guys /males.

The Growlers have been flying quite a bit as well, I should have taken some photos , the job I was on this past week is right by the approach to Ault field.

Simmer down Tim.:D

This is a nice shot of a Prowler, a noisy one for who ever took it. He'd really be tearing up the air in that type turn and dirtyed up ( flaps and slats extented). Even packing a HARM missle, only one drop tank, must have been a short trip , or a duty tanker was along.

Prowlers are:

twice as loud
ten times as slow
and 100 times as ugly

I was pointing out the classic three abreast alignment.

I'd say more than twice as loud.

Maybe ten times slower.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, ask any Aircrew if they'd like to fly a mission into hostile air space with OUT a Prowler in the flight. Nuttin like a Prowler in any other service the USA has, WE BE JAMMIN! In VAQ-141 the motto was Decieve, Degrade , Destroy!

No one ( Army, Air Force, Marine or Navy ) goes on a flyin mission in Iraq or Afghanistan without at least one Prowler along!

Cell phone suppression is now high on the list of things to do, think IED's. They 'No go Boom , boom" , if the duty Prowler is in the air.

Like I said some squadron is about to deploy, it could just be for normal work ups , but some ones going to the boat, soon. Normal USN / NAVAIR life.

Have they been bouncing down your way? I've seenum coming back to Ault field, maybe they'll be goin to the boat as well? If so it's a CQ Det. (Carrier Qualification)

There's only two Growlers here and they're a long way from being ready to deploy as a fleet squadron.

If you're worried about the Russian thing, which is normal, sort of ( to be worried about it) . Don't try and tie flyin in our area to actions across the pond, we've got carriers all ready at sea and IF Dubya wants to use them they can be on Yankee station;) Mo Ricky.

But what you see in Coupeville is far far removed from what might happen. Part of the process? Yes , but not a direct part.

TimH

All I know is there was a huge ramp up in Prowler activity just before we went into Iraq.

Its been quiet for a long time and now they are flying every day.

But like you said...its probably nothing.

when you live right next to the airstrip you notice these things.

Another thing it could be is a money issue, as in whats called OpTar Or Operational Target. Use the cash , buy the gas or lose it.

So it could be a end of OpTar cycle, the follow the money thing.

About easiest way to burn up money AND complete required training is to, as one of Maintenance Master Chiefs would say to end the morning maintenance meetings , FLY JETS! Good ole S.O.B, he was a good Maintenance chief:) we flew lots of hours.
