Hello Gang,
I must confess to a little ignorance on this topic so please bear with me.
I am owned by a teak on ipol carvel planked Cheoy Lee Robb 35 yawl. I had her up in Port Townsend this summer for topside painting. Before she was hauled I noticed a slight (less than 1/8") bowing of the shearplanking between the mast and the bow. It is a little worse on the port side than the starboard side. The painter I was working with (a wooden boat owner himself) feels the shrouds were way overtensioned. This probably occured a year ago when the mast was restepped. I have sailed her a moderate amount this year (never enough it seems) including a wonderful day racing in 20-25 kts winds the weekend before she was hauled out.
I have looked up at the planking from the V-berth and don't see (or feel) any cracks in the frames. Is is likely that the overtensioned shrouds could have done this? I am going to get a shipwright to look at this with me but I am curious as to how serious this is likely to be.
Any thoughts or suggestions on where I can go to learn about bulging shearplanks and how to fix them would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim
