Today was cruising day, get-to-know each other day. She handles like a dream, tracks as true as I could ask, and will fly if I put my back into her.
Got a couple of little kinks to work out then I'll load 'er up with flyrods and catch some smallies

Ya need some drip guards on that paddle.:)

I am in the corner that your paddles could stand another foot and a half in length. The shot that has the paddle in the neutral postion shows the blade just outside the rails which creates a pretty high angle when flipping the paddle from one side to the other to reach the water close to the boat. my uneducated guess and opinion.
By the way, that boat is too pretty to get fish guts on it.

No kidding. How do I make them?

You might be right, Mike. I was planning on building an extra paddle anyway, so I'll try adding some length to the next one. I do get awfully wet. Thing is, I don't want it so long it gets in the way while fishing.
Thank you, everyone, for the kind comments. Except for some bottom paint issues, I'm very happy with the boat (and the fish guts will just add flavor to the boat!!)

Mike is correct. A longer paddle will be way more efficient, dryer, and easier on you. What I would do Phil is make the longer paddle, and then pack the one you have or even a canoe paddle for quietly stalking fish in tight quarters. Always good practice to pack a spare paddle, and in the bit of kayaking I've done a canoe paddle does fine for emergencies. (When you drop the big paddle and it floats away) :o
As far as drip guards go, store bought paddles always seem to use a rubber flange type thingy. You could check some kayak shops and see if you could buy drip guards there. Or make one. Here's an example on a composite paddle with a drip guard..

Awesome job Phil!I love the color scheme. She doesn't look as tender as I would have thought. Do you think she'll be stable if you stand to cast?
...
By the way, that boat is too pretty to get fish guts on it.Bite your tongue Mike. You'd have to fish from shore if that was the case with your boats. Besides, they must sell garden hoses and scrubbies somewhere near Shelby.;)

Turk's Heads and the like are often used as "drip guards", too.

I like that idea. Especially for this boat. :)

Thanks for the link, Fred. You're great about finding stuff like that.
But for this boat - especially since everything else is homecrafted - I like the idea of the Turk's Head.

Heck just take an old stinky sock and wrap it around the shaft and cover it with duck tape. Maybe use two if one is not big enough.:p:D

I always like the shots from on board looking forward. But watch out for those rocks, it is too pretty to scratch on your first day out.

It's Greek for "Solitude."
Pronounced Monaksia.
I have a greek friend in Pittsburgh that helped me come up with it.
