Well, with one week left until Rockland I have the first coat of paint on. Kirby's Irish Green! What have I done!?!

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid24/p2d221feb361b822f7ac41f2d7aeffc05/fd926ba3.jpg http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b7cc24b3127ccec29eca22796800000010O00AbNnLhizaOW IPbz4S/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

Will this darken up with another coat? Should I re-tint it a little?

You want a small boat to be highly visible right?

Here is a picture of the fin drive.

I'll have better pics when the drive is actually mounted to the boat, very soon now.

Oh, here's a pic of the deck with two coats if varnish on it

Good going Steven!! It looks like Irish Green to me, but it may be a bit bright. Now, if the deck is a light color you won't see it a bit (if the family lets you use her, that is).

I would say you are gong to have plenty of leprechauns following your boat and stealing your beer! I like bright colors on small boats. On bigger ones they look gaudy, but they work on the little guys.

Looks great, Steve. How do you have time to get so much done and still post reports and pictures? Looking forward to seeing it in person.

Looks great to me Steven! I am sure Harry will enjoy seeing it also.

Hope to get a closer look next Friday. Around 1:00PM?

Jim, I don't sleep much. Or at least not lately. And you have to do something while the varnish dries. I'm painting in the shop so I can't make any dust until it's not tacky.
1 PM Friday Andy. I won't miss it this time. Where? Woodenboat booth?
Second coat of paint goes on tonight. I'm really down to final assembly and building the seat and the two hatches. I have this piece of lacewood that I had resawn. Is bookmatched lacewood hatchcovers overkill? They'll either be great or hidious. I think I'll go for it. More pics tomorrow, hopefully.

Steven, bright or dare I say "gay" colours (in the true english sense of the word) DO look good on small boats. Your green is bright but the colour will be ok...the fish will like it too!!!! I'm a fan of using 'colours' to paint boats with and all my little boats were painted thus. We are planning to paint our cabin top on the schooner a muted safety orange/yellow colour because we don't like white cabin tops (for a number of reasons) and the safety aspect is good for survival at sea if the need arises. With only a week to go I hope your paint will be hard enough though? Wait ans see how the elements 'develop' your paint colour. We had a green cap rail on our last boat and the sun made it much darker after time.
Bernadette.

Good show Steve..we won't have any problem finding the boat. smile.gif

Wolftek, My guess is the Leprechauns will steal his beer and carry it off in Steves boat...you may have to sleep in the boat Steve. :D

It looks bright alright . . . but I like the color. The sea gods won't be insulted.

Anyway, the actual finished color will probably look a little different when you see it in the sunlight since the photo shows you using florescent lights (which are more towards the blue end of the light spectrum as compared to sunlight).

Thanks Steven! Since I'm building a Fiddlehead, having these pics available again is a real good thing! I do recall seeing them once briefly before Imagestation melted down. Good to have them back.

About all that book matched lumber; did you resaw it yourself?

And... how was the show?

I resawed the wood for the planking, decks and hatches at a friend's place cause his saw had the riser blocks. The whole boat is bookmatched. :D

Lots more in the other threads I just bumped.

When I got to the Show I looked for Harry to tell him that I had brought the boat. I reminded him who I was: "Remember me? I bought the Thistle plans in March at the Maine Boatbuilder's Show?" "Oh yeah, have you started building her yet?" he asked me. :D He said no one had ever built one so fast and I hadn't even had to call him for help. :)
