View Full Version : Captains Spar over Cetol Poly ?
Last year I finish the bright work on my skiff with Siekens Cetol Poly Spar. I want to give it another coat and to cover a new seat and some bare patches. I could not buy any of the Cetol and I found some Captains Spar (I would have used this in the first place if I knew it was available locally). I have lightly sanded all the varnish. Anyone think there will be any problems using the Captains Spar? Thanks for the help.

Perhaps. There may be adhesion difficulties. If I were you, I'd contact both manufacturers and ask their customer service guy what they think. My guess is ZSpar will tell you not to put their product on top of Cetol and Sikkens will tell you the same, because both want to sell you their stuff! Experimentation is the order of the day.

At least three people in the last few weeks have been talking about putting two-part clearcoat on top of Cetol as a finish. Dunno if it works, but this is apparently catching on in Florida.

I know many of you folks cringe at the sight of cetol in the place of a propper varnish job, however if done as recommended, it holds up a pretty long time..
I have been using it for years and routinely get better than two years befor sanding and recoating, all of which can be knocked out in two or three afternoons.
Why mess with a good thing?
