Every year my wife and I take a vacation together in the fall. We call this our 'anniversary trip' because we were married in November, and we've been doing this every year since 1995 (we've been married going on 26 years). Probably the best memories of our marriage outside of the time spent with the kiddos.
For most of those vacations we have gone to Maine. About 10 times during the time I mentioned, but we always go somewhere. This year we were going back to Seattle so that I could sail Dragons again. The I decided that Maine would be better because I WOULDN'T be sailing Dragons and would have more time with her. The other day she told me that she really just wanted to stay home this year, just the two of us. Walk on the beach. Eat out, or just sit and read, that sort of thing. It surprised me, but I knew that it was coming. We've both been to Europe this year, separately, and we've both spent a lot of time away from each other traveling. She works six days a week, at least ten hours per day at the restaurant. She needs some down time.
So, this year for our anniversary trip we will just stay home. In a way I'm a little sad, because as I have gotten older I have seen just how fast things will disappear on you, and there's never any guarantee that you can go to places like Acadia again if you pass up the chance this time. On the other hand, we've got a schooner we never use, I could use some time away from the regimented workplace, and there's a Finn regatta in Fairhope (8 miles away) at the end of that week. It'll be a fun time and I can get some rest.
Just musing on a Sunday morning.
