We currently have a contract on a 1964 43' Evers pilothouse ketch. The owners do not want any fasteners removed below the waterline-they consider this very invasive and as they are Swiss and there is a language problem at times, have tried to explain that the oak planking was coated with some type of tar-epoxy in Turkey several years ago and they do not want this breached. According to the owners, the fasteners are square, galvanized iron 4-5" nails - this they know from replanking at the waterline and some refastening work they had done in 1988. Anyway, the surveyor we hired, did a complete sounding of the hull and a complete inspection of the interior frames. His report was very favorable and he did actually observe one of the iron nails that had partially missed a frame. The insurance companies I have sent applications to have replied that the fasteners will have to be revealed and inspected before they can bind insurance. We are committed to purchasing this wonderful boat, but we must have hull insurance at this point. Any suggestions?
