Ok so as most of you know Tidbit has a nice Honda 5 hp 4 stroke outboard. Been running like a top mostly since we got it.

This is the motor.

The fuel connector is one of these

to one of these gas tanks under the seat

A while back the fuel connector on the motor partially broke the little tip of the fuel tip broke but the locking connector fit over it and its been working fine for a year.

Just this last weekend the motor was running smooth then all of a sudden would die. It seemed to be fuel transfer related like the motor ran out of gas even if the tank was full. Pump the ball, starts, runs for 40 sec. then dies. Repeat and repeat till it runs on its own.

Fast down and dirty solution to get home was to frequently pump the bulb so that it doesn't die. Eventually the gas siphons and the engine runs perfectly.

So what is all your opinions on how to solve this ?

Check the air valve on the fuel tank.

It's getting worse and your motor is getting air instead of fuel through the fuel line. The piston vacuum won't suck fuel uphill without a perfectly sealed fuel system between the tank vent and the float bowl.

Replace the broken parts and check the rest of the fuel lines and clamps for integrity. Fuel lines can deteriorate in a manner that they won't leak fuel but won't hold the necessary vacuum to pump fuel either.

If your fuel line is in good condition go to any marine store and get two (jobber) Honda fittings, one for the engine one for the tank. About 5 bucks each. Cut the old ones off. Replace new ones and connect with stainless clamps.

Better though for like 30 bucks get a complete new fuel line with from a Honda shop with Honda fittings already installed and a new plunger to boot..

The one time my engine gave me trouble last season it turns out the little o-ring from the fuel tank quick connect fitting (like above) had gone missing. I just replaced the fitting and all was well again.

Bet it's the check valve in the bulb. Ours bit the dust and the parts dude said it's the ethanol. Who knows but easy fix...new bulb from the marine store.

If the tip had broken off, it would have chewed the 0-ring eventually and that is probably why it isn't working now. Until you can get the part, you might try smoothing any rough edges from the tip and replace the fitting from the fuel line which you will have to replace anyway. They are too cheap to worry about replacing just the o-ring unless that's your only other option. Also, if you don't replace the fitting on the motor, leave the fuel line connected and just disconnect the tank side until you get it fixed right.

You have a classic case of sucking air. The fact that you can pump the bulb and get fuel to the motor indicates that the tank pick-up and the tank vent are working properly. You have an air leak somewhere in the hose or connectors, and it takes only a very small leak to break the vacuum and stop the fuel flow.

"you have a classic case of sucking air"...

Or, your fuel pump is failing, like it did on my just retired Evinrude. You have lead the list down the path of "sucking air", and that may be the right answer, but the pump is a possibility too. You'll have to fix the line before you know if it's the pump. Buy a new line. Unless of course,

"A while back the fuel connector on the motor partially broke the little tip of the fuel tip broke but the locking connector fit over it and its been working fine for a year."

means that you broke the connector on the motor, in which case you need to talk to a Honda dealer...
