Just saw this http://www.komonews.com/news/20662184.html

I grew up in the area and know the rock quite well. It is surprising that she went up on this particular reef: it's marked.

Hope the reports of no damage are accurate.

An electronic chart display can pay for itself many times over.

Only if you look at it...

This boat was supposed to be in Victoria for the Victoria Tall Ship's Festival this weekend (June 28-29) before going to Tacoma.

It appears that some tickets will have to be refunded.

Isn't that the same place where the Malibu ran aground?

I think it is, Pat.

Sorry, guys, I was trying to post a new thread for this and my computer locked up - took it 20 minutes to post, so I'm gonna delete mine.

Here are the links I was trying to get up:

It's a few miles east of where the Malibu ran aground.

The Adventuress is up on a rock just off Bell Island between Shaw and Crane Islands.

I'm not hearing anything on 16 or 22. Of course I'm 28 miles or so away.

The tide is still way out too.

I hope all those new purpleheart frames and brand new planks held up.

I wonder if I will be seeing her getting pulled out here tonight? Or if they are going to B-ham?

That sucks!! After all the effort that went into the refit hopefully she will be under way again soon. I wacked a well charted rock outside of parks bay several years ago, Hauling ass under sail not paying attention. For those unfamiliar with the San Juans it can go from 200 + feet to 3 feet in a boat length.

That's a shame. Hopefully, it will only be embarrassing.

It must not be too much of an emergency. They arnt coming out until tomorrow afternoon is what I'm hearing here in PT. I hope not anyways.

Tidal races up there can get pretty squirrley too. Some places are much worse than others. I don't know how that spot is. I spent a fair amount of time going from Friday Harbor to Deer Harbor and West Sound, and never saw anything that caught my attention.

Ugh. Massive sucks.

She's not taking on water at least

According to the tv they're off the rocks now, and still hoping to make the tallships festival.

Ouch... I know that place real well. Lots of kelp to warn you off the southwest end of that reef, but east of the green mark in the photos is a pretty obscure ledge running about a hundred yards or so towards Harney Channel. You DON'T want to cut that corner...

A friend said in the old days of the round Shaw island race anchoring in Wasp pass to wait out the tide was a good tactic due to the current.

Capt. Richard Rodriguez, a vessel assist captain based out of Friday Harbor, was called out to help pull the Adventuress off the rocks.

He has a great blog called the Bitter End (http://captrichardrodriguez.blogspot.com/). He put up a couple photos earlier today ... I expect he'll have a full report later.

Incidentally, the Bitter End is one of my favorite blogs. Every time he gets sent out on a call, he'll take a photo of the boat that he's towing ... then explain how the boater screwed up. Very educational. Sometimes very harsh. And almost always deserved.

Does anyone know who was captaining Adventuress?

Here's a description of the hazards of the area from NW Yachting magazine.

On the picture at the Bitter End blog, you can see the green marker on the pylon on the rocks off Bell Island off to starboard of the Adventuress. Which direction are we looking there? Is she aground North of those rocks with bow East? Are the rocks that are visible between the mark and Bell Island which would put her aground on the shoal extending from Caldwell Pt? Or am I turned around?

I dont think it's as far north as the shoal off Caldwell point. I think it's just the wrong side of the marker. In between Bell Island and the marker. Hard to tell. There's other pics on those other links that seem to show that little peninsula before Broken Pt. off to the starbird side. Without the shoal off Bell in between there and Shaw. I'm dizzy....

Has anyone come across an aerial photo from higher up that would pinpoint that location? Altho the Adventuress is much deeper than my boat, I would still like to know where that is and stay well away from it.

Some of these areas are fine until you have to share them with a ferry in a strong current. Then its starts to get a bit dicey.

If you go to the link in the original posting and scroll down, you will find an aerial photo. It looks to me as if the Adventuress grounded to the NE of the Bell Island Rock marker.

I am quite relieved that the only damage was embarrassment.

Thanks, I hadn't scrolled down far enough before. But what bothers me is that my chart shows the shallowest on that side of the mark, and quite close to the mark, as 11 feet and deepening quite soon to the east. It just looks like she is farther away than that. Obviously she isn't.

I'm really glad she is okay. That boat has been around here as long as I have been in Seattle and it seems like her condition has improved every year. When I first saw her, she was a bit rusty and rough, had no topmasts, and had a gawdawful big house on the deck. I sure wish the CG would let her carry her topsails.

They carry them for photos only. the CG is a bunch of weinies.
A few years ago there was a blow and a bunch of boats on the rocks in PT. The coast guard cutter was right there but wouldnt help anyone out because it was too dangerous.

They must be waiting for the tide to pull her. Out in front of the marina here in PT right now:

I guess she was cleared by the CG. Amid cheers...
