Any Brits with ideas for a marina on the South coast - we are looking for somewhere easy going and liveaboard / wooden boat friendly and within a couple of hours of Southampton. We may be stopping for a while and want a pleasant place to live with a few basic amenities.

I found a website for UK marinas (http://www.premiermarinas.com/?ref=www.berthsearch.com), they all look very nice and have vacancies, not sure what the environment is like though. We arent at all the yacht clubby types, and call a bucket a bucket, not a bouquet!

Thanks for any insights.

cheers

We are not being rude and deliberately ignoring you! I guess there are no Brits on this Forum, (including me), familiar with marinas on the S Coast.

I am familiar with a marina on the W Coast (a good 6 hour drive from Southampton though) but suspect they will be much the same countrywide - unless anyone else knows different. The folks who keep their boats at this marina are generally a friendly bunch - always ready to catch a heaving line, give advice where the best chandlers, engine servicing, boat haulout yards are etc. It's secure and the operators are well organised and helpful. It's not at all 'yacht clubby', although I expect such places do exist. (Wouldn't suit me either!) There's a waiting list too.

As for wooden boats, you won't see many. I would think 99% tupperware in marinas in the UK.

Sorry can't be of more help - if I can glean any more from friends of friends etc I'll post it.

Bit more. Some pics I took on the S Coast a couple of years ago:

This is Gosport Marina in the centre and Clarence Marina on the extreme right. Close to Southampton - you can just see Southampton Water in the background.

This is Haslar Marina, close to Gosport Marina. Entrance to Portsmouth Harbour in foreground, Solent and Isle of Wight in the background.
