John:

I wish I could credit this quote. I C&P'd it years ago and it speaks to this.

Safety is a fine thing, but as an obsession it rots the soul.
If I should live to be 90, and I am called upon to attest to the other nursing-home residents that my life was about something racier than guessing right on the butter-v-margarine conundrum, I will speak of that thunderstorm on Lake Superior.
I’ll describe the touch-and-go struggle to keep the boat pointed just enough off the wind to maintain headway, and the jackhammer pounding of a madly luffing mainsail trying to spill a 75-knot gale. I’ll talk about the way we huddled in the cockpit with our eyes rigidly forward because looking aft would mean another lightning-illuminated glimpse of the dinghy we towed, risen completely out of the water and twirling like a propeller on the end of its line.

Pleasant though many of them were, with the cheese and crackers and such, I doubt I’ll have much to say about the hours I spent on Superior with the sails furled, motoring in perfect safety through flat water and dead air.

ain't that the truth.;)

Well, perhaps I wasn't quite as forthcoming as I could have been when asked about the weather.
'good, a few showers maybe'. Which as it happens it turned out to be .
Mind you, I was moved to put the traveller down in the 30 knot rainsqualls that bounced us for quarter of an hour sailing home yesterday.

Does look like the face of appreciation and pleasure. Hope you did OK anyway.

Yeah it was great Thad. Didn't go far and stayed anchored( drunks bay). The weather was good enough for quite a bit of boat hopping and the kids went for a long walk on the island sunday while I went up the stick to change a spinnaker block.

loverly view from up there it was too.;)

Priceless! It ain't all beer and skittles, is it? But then the sun comes out, it warms up a bit, and you feel sooooooo good about things. Wonderful photo, John.

Wait until they get boyfriends, not that they don't have them already. But when they cross a certain line, say 18, 19, wherever they do cross it. You'll never hear that again! I hear they come back later.

16 ain't so hot either Lew. ( we have 3)
One of those is a boy ( port) of nearly 13 and the other is the 11 yr old gal (stbd).
Tom sailed us home yesterday and did a nice job of feathering us through the squalls, could sail fairly high and consistently although he started losing concentration after an hour and a half .He crossed tacks with a couple of boats and had to pinch a bit to miss a buoy .Good practice for him though eh.

I'm sorry to laugh, but that is such a good picture. :D

Reminds me of a story told of Dave toodling about the Keys when the girls were young. Three girls. Two fishing poles.

When the squabbling over who was going to fish next got too much to take, Dave went forward and threw both poles and gear in the water.

As the story goes it took him less than 5 minutes to realize the serious error of throwing overboard the one thing the kids had to keep them occupied and the youngest (about 8 at the time) got to dive after the rods... :D

You like that eh Margo.
'are we there yet':D.
We just threaten to chuck the kids in if they get out of control. Only had to do it once to one of them and now they believe in it.You get to watch what many thousands in swimming lessons buys you.

Jase , you weren't the mystery texter telling me you were in Station bay then?( spose I coulda texted back with ' who the is this?')

Wow - Jase - I think you are onto something there. What sort of excuse is John going to have? He can only use one car at a time and one boat at a time, can't he?

"Dad, can I borrow Waione for the weekend" No, I'm using her ... "OK, Riada will do fine, thanks"

Heh it would seem to be a trap John is going to fall into as the kids work out the logic of it.:D

nope I wasn't the mystery texter John, furtherest I got was the airforce base doing a tutu around to charge the batteries up a smidge :D

The trouble is they've now got used to too much comfort on Riada, if you'd stuck to Waione they would have been too busy fighting over the lack of space to look like that. Big boats are bad things in many ways, missed out on a good steam launch when I'd got used to the comforts of Romo, 25 feet didn't seem enough, now I've got neither . Stick to rough cramped boats, at least you'll never be bored.

The funny thing is, is that despite her size she's not a particularlycomfortable boat. She certainly wouldn't appeal to a lot of people anyway but yes, its relative.
We did 25 years on Waione and a lot of that was sailing within the constraints of the vessel, which is part of operating an Edwardian gaff cutter short handed. This boat extends what we can do , when we can do it ,and allows some new challenges. We're having fun.

Tom on the helm coming home yesterday just before the squalls came in.
Nice sail.

I think those middle teen years (with the girls) are the hardest, at least they were in my house. Our two girls were Hellions, separated by 2 years and best friends. Now into their 20s, everything is good again. No return to boating, but the boyfriends are really into the boat! One of these days I will have crew. Our foster daughter Kelly, comes down with me and sands, paints, cleans, tapes and does whatever she can. I'm teaching her to do boat work. The son I never had. She'll be our lifelong boating daughter, but she didn't grow up on a boat. The daughters I did have? Rock and Roll wannabees!

Thanks Lew. I really do wonder if they'll be lost to boating, my eldest shows signs of it already. Perhaps being brought up with it makes them take it for granted, where someone like me who has conceived of the desire to get into it themselves is more motivated. Ah well, I'll take what comes, my bet is the two in the pic will continue on with it.
Kelly sounds keen!
