View Full Version : Concordia #9 Underway

After a 16 year hiatus, #9 has been hauled out of her resting place in Lyme, CT and is at Pilot's Point in Westbrook. She'll be off her hydrualic trailer today, not without incident yesterday (nothing major, just a little sinking in the sand and a tow truck). Wednesday she'll be picked up and will head to Arkansas.
Sorry, no pictures. If anyone can catch her on the roadway, you'll earn a credit for a crew position in some future race. :)

The transom looks a little dodgy.
We KNEW there was work to do, but she still looks good, even with the dodgy transom (and everything else?). It will be interesting how much gets replaced.

She has sleek, beautiful lines...but boy she looks rough...
How much time per week are you going to be able to put into working on her? Got any help? Do you have an idea when she'll be ready to sail?
Ouch, hope I didn't have too many questions...just curious...
Thanks for the pixs, Joe... Good to see you back.

It ain't Humpty Dumpty ;)
There's nothing about wooden boats that various amounts of time and money can't fix...
That and the power and belief of the Wooden Boat Forum :)
A few years from now Raka's avatar will show a scene like mine (or Concordia33's) :D

Wow - they stuck her inside? She looks different in the light of day. When will she sail again? My goal is ten years. Most likely I'll be working alone but if things work out the boatwright who has been housing her will come out in Jan or Feb or for the winter to work on her.
Thanks for the pictures.

I see a whole lot of potential.
Ms. Margo said it exactly right, and that should be the mantra of anyone taking on something like this. I am always asked if this Dragon or that Dragon can be 'saved', and my answer is always 'yes'. Because it can. Just depends on your level of commitment, doesn't it?
Raka, you were the one interested in building a 6mR weren't you? Well, it appears that you've found a project worthy of your time. I wish you joy of her.

Mickey,
Yes, a 6 was my other consideration. If you are ever interested or in the area, come on up. I'm hosting a Swift regatta on the lake in October which will now include a workday or two.

Paul and I wish you all the best on your journey. You have a beautiful piece of history. I know you must look at her the way we looked at our Concordia. We never saw Weatherly as a wreck even when she was in need of a major restoration. This sentiment seems to be shared as I read posts by WB owners. We all seem to understand the pleasure of restoring a piece of art or creating a new one.

Thanks Sharon - sorry that Weatherly isn't being launched on your time, but theirs. Hope to meet you in August. If invited onboard, I'll take only pictures and advice.

I think it could be informationally constructive to see what SARA looked like when Margo and Dave got taken by her. One of the positives I see on this boat is that she seems (seems) to be at least somewhat intact structurally. I wish I could have gotten up and inside to poke around, But I was pretty much told to take some snaps and not mess around. I moved a few ladders to get the shots I did, And got a few hairy eyeballs for it. I guess if my Lyme disease hadn't been kicking in big time, and I hadn't been limping like Quasimoto, it might have been a different story.....

I can dig out some pictures, but SARAH looked perfectly fine when we got her.
It was the intervening eight years... ;)
Day One: http://www.sailingwithsarah.com/proj1.html
Seriously, she looked perfectly fine excluding some varnish work - salon hatch, etc.

Looks can be deceiving?
Thad - Looking at these pictures, one cannot be deceived! The deception will work in the opposite direction - wow, I don't have to replace that? I'm already happy that the booms just need some sanding and varnish.
Sharon - ummm, ok.
Perhaps she'll make it to the 80th Concordia reunion and 90th.
PS Just think of all the new tools and shop space I'll acquire. :)

She's closer, not at home but 8 miles away. The driver didn't think he could make it back out if he got to the house due to high center on the road and a couple of 90 degree turns. Between that and the bone head leaving the boat stands in CT, it made for some extra hours building a cradle, twice. One for the boat to go onto after coming off the trailer. Than another rebuild putting it unto a new trailer. It may get another attempt this weekend to see how close we can get it to it's final rebuild spot.

Glad she made it down there in one piece (figuratively speaking)! You got some pretty good bones to work with there, but I don't envy you the work ahead! Start the documentation process early! You never know what things you don't think are important now turn out to be later!

She is officially safe in the yard on her own stands. Now the fun begins. Documenting everything as I go.

The restoration of spirit after a few sails in Sarah is almost of biblical proportions:D

Something changed with Shutterfly
I'm back at home now, and although I was posting pictures effortlessly (maybe too effortlessly for some people ;)) last night, when I right click to copy the properties from the batch I just uploaded, I can tell by the looks of it that it's wrong.
Tried just so Raka wouldn't think it was all a trick to get him to e-mail me some pictures. :D
I'm going to close everything, restart and trying logging in to Shutterfly again ...

The 39' is my bench mark for 'pretty' in boats. I see there is still an Alden Barnacle Class (project) on Ebay for 5k. Almost as pretty as the Concordia Yawl.

OK, last night Shutterfly miraculously started linking again...
So without further ado (other than my apologies for the delay... :() may I present the lucky vessel Amphora arriving at and enjoying her new digs:

I've got at least one more recent picture to upload, but wanted to get these posted before Shutterfly tanked again.
Amphora's proud new papa can fill you all in on the details and the tremendous amount he's gotten done already getting the project organized and ready to roll. :)
