Couple of yrs ago, I saw on this forum (although I do not remember under which heading) a link to a rogue wave rolling a sailboat just under the south tower, at Ft. Mason, SF Bay. Anyone remember that post or that link? Thanks.

Here are stills of the event, if this is what you mean? I didn't know that a video was taken. I'd like to see the footage if footage exhists.

Two of my friends had their boats swamped, two different yachts, crossing the Bateman's Bay Bar just recently, when we were at the ANZAC Day Regatta on the NSW South Coast. The waves were only 1.5m and came from nowhere. I saw one of the swampings happen when we were only 50m from the yacht. The other swamping required a rescue of the Skipper by a safety boat, when the yacht's crew couldn't get back to get the Skipper.

I don't think the waves on that side of the bridge and Bay qualify as 'rogues' exactly. It was a case of an inexperienced sailor finding himself unable to see and recognize the danger ahead of him. Big waves can look unthreatening from seaward.

That area 'eats' various vessels regularly, no rogue waves required, just plain old Pacific surf -- plus the complexities of the Potato Patch.

Rats!
I had hopes up for a video of This Rogue Wave (http://www.wingo.com/newick/roguewave.html)

Looks like they sailed to close into the surf zone. Should'nt have been in that close.

Looks like they might need a new coat of bottom paint soon, too.

It is good to know that Yachtsea was eventually re-floated. There was a link for more information, but it broke.

Without knowing the area at all, a couple of things come to mind after seeing the photos --

Running straight down into a narrow surf zone with a concrete bridge pier one side and solid rock the other was dumb.

Leaving the companion hatch wide open while you did it was dumb.

Not using safety lines was maybe not so dumb, given you were going to be dumb enough to do both those things in the first place.

Not wearing life jackets was dumb (if they weren't -- hard to tell who was who.)

Trying to reboard over the stern when the hull was half full of water and the transom almost awash was dumb.
I know it's all very well being wise after the event, but....

In photos #44 and #49 you can see that the crew was wearing inflatable PFDs, and it's a good thing they were or I bet they would have drowned.

"Rocks and Shoals" is a collection of 'dumb ideas' that worked and many, many more 'dumb ideas' which did NOT work.

Don't apologize for being 'wise after the fact'... we call that a "Naval Review Board".
