Got a chance at getting a new bulkhead compass for way short money. Its a plastimo contest compass

Any opinions on these? Kind of cool as there is a window on both sides.

Cheap is as cheap does - to coin a phrase.
Depends what you want to use it for. In your new boat, go for it.

They are fine, standard small keelboat racing compass around here.
If it is going to spend time in the open for long, see if you can find a cover.

Covers are 12 bucks and I can still get them.
The compass is new for 55 bucks. I wasn't sure if I should pass but the price is right.

Some bulkhead compasses need to be in a vertical bulkhead. I'd check the slope of your intended location vs. the Plastimo specs. A bevel block may be needed.

That would be about $300 here and our $ is .80 on yours. If I go to a chandlery today I'll have a look. As Paul says, quite the standard and given the crap that supposedly top names like sestrel dumped on us in the 80's, I'd rather trust that brand.

Mark, I appears that the Plastimo Contest 101 comes in MANY variants of bulkhead slope and color scheme. More details at http://www.plastimousa.com/compass_contest.htm#offshore75
With a little scrounging., they're about $150.

I use the Plastimo Mini in my dinghies. Good visibility and sight lines. As far as I am concerned it's a high quality compass for the money spent (about $110 US for the Mini). I had one in my Finn and I just put one in my Megabyte.

Its the 130 contest new in the box for 55 smackers. I got it this morning and installed it when I got home. Slick unit and better than my uncompensated one with broken lights. Came with a cover and everything. Thanks Guys!

dunno forget to swing the doggone thing AFTER you have all your stuff stowed aboard, including anchors, chain, other goods.....and make a couple copies of the compensation table. I would have offered my spare Ritchie but it would have been overkill for that boat...

This'n has served well. Be sure to follow the instructions on isolating from other wiring and twisting the lamp wires so the boat's electrics don't pull it off.
