In the movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian", what type of boat is that used to cross the river? It is incredible!!!

I will see if I can find photos.

Thanks,
Barry

Here is one OK shot.

It has very nice detailing along the upper edge.

Quite probably designed for the movie...like the canoes in Lord of the Rings. But looking closer I don't think it actually is IN the water. Look along the waterline...there should be SOMETHING showing under the water other than a rather weird looking rudder shape. The hull stops exactly at the water and even a flat bottomed boat draws some water. The lines suggest the hull continues in a rounded fashion so you should see some kind of darkness below the water. The people are outlined too sharply too...to use a phrase...this has been photoshopped.

Your right. It looks like it is magically sitting on top of the water

I noticed the 0" draft in the photo too.

When the DVD comes out I'll try and download several photos. It seemed very wide for the length.

There were a number of shots of it in the movie. I asked my wife after the movie what she thought about it... "There was a boat in the movie"? was her response.

There are no liquids in Narnia.

People get killed by swords without bleeding.

Boats have zero displacement.

It's a magical place. :D

Tom,

you have that slightly off....

in a place with no liquids any boat would have infinite displacement since it would never drop below DWL regardless of load

have to agree about not seeing any blood in the movie last night

Were it not for the photoshopped picture and the fact that it is not actually in the water I would say that it remarkable resembles a small modified knarr with a stern rudder.

artists take on a norse style.

this is somewhat similar: http://www.batritningar.se/default.aspx?Language=EN&Currency=USD&Page=BoatplansDetails&Id=30

too many strakes and the wrong bow/stern curves though.

I wonder how stable the narnia boat is.

If you go see the movie there is a genuine film sequence of that boat being oared and beached.

it is a good movie on its own BTW.

The current Narnia movie "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is chock ablock with boats. First there's the Dawn Treader itself, which is quite the fantasy vessel. The boat was actually built, well, a "set boat" was built you can see some details here:

and read a bit about building the set here...

http://www.boxofficemagazine.com/articles/2010-11-narnia-ahoy

any views in the actual movie of the ship on the water were CGI scripted. The giveaway was one shot where this square-rigged vessel was miraculously sailing directly to windward. Hmmm. I got a chuckle out of that.

However, the launches and landing boats are real boats. You see them out of the water several times. They're quite nice, though a bit beamy for the length.

This little YouTube video focuses on one of the heartthrob movie stars, but gives some good views of the boats in the water.

Also, near the end of the movie the heroic mouse, Reepacheep, heads to Aslans Country in a super-mouse sized coracle, which is pretty darned cute. I'm sure it was a cgi job, they wouldn't bother making an actual miniature coracle.

The whole movie was filmed in Australia, so I would assume that the small boats were built in Oz. Anybody know who put them together? They did a wonderful job.

Oh, that's excellent! I had no idea. Yes, I bet that must have been a great project, and how much of a kick is it to know that 5 million-plus people are seeing your handiwork on the screen! They are really lovely boats, Well Done!

What's happening with the boats now? I would think that they'd be up for sale, or perhaps the Director snagged one for his own use.

Hi Steven/Alan,

It was fun. We only had 5 weeks to get them out the door so it was busy. Apparently they "archive" the boats once the film is finished and they may or may not be used again which is a bit of a shame.

You certainly do get a kick out of seeing them on the big screen. Every movie I have seen since we did this job that has boats or some other handcrafted item in it makes me think of the small businesses that have worked hard behind the scenes.

regards,

Andrew

I went and had a look at it...through the fence that is. I thought to myself, that's never gonna sail. Impressive though.

I saw Voyage of the dawn treader this weekend, wonderfull movie, I though I had seen some Cal Yawls carrying the intrepid adventures toward Aslan's country, they did a good job dressing them up, Repycheep has a great little coracle too.

there was some discussion after about weather the big boat was on the water with motor power and just the sail was computer effects or weather the boat was a set and the water was added, the only water that looked CGI was the big waves in the storm, the rest must have been real water with the boat and cgi spray around the hull, pretty convincing except for the sailing dead up wind part.

I saw the Dawn Treader movie too, I loved it and the boats were spectacular, well done Andrew.

I sailed into Syracusa in Sicily in September may start a thread about that) but the town they invade in part of the movie is Syracusa, with the modern buildings electronically removed

Ah What a Magical place, Tasmania.
Magical boats there too.
My favorite boat in the world is right there in Hobart, a few miles from Denman Marine in Kettering.
The Aage Nielsen ketch, Holgar Danske. Waiting for me.
