Does any one have a source for 5" - 5 1/2" by 3/4" "tufnol" type sheaves? Pin can be 1/2" or 5/8". The largest I have found to date are 100mm or 4" from Davies/ClassicMarine/RW/Toplicht.
Thanks,
John

McMaster Carr has linen-phenolic composite (tufnol) in sheet form.
See their # 6842K12 (http://www.mcmaster.com/itm/find.ASP?tab=find&context=psrchDtlLink&fasttrack=False&searchstring=6842K12)
I'll let others talk you into other materials.

If R&W can't get them I'm not sure anyone can. Must they be Tufnol? Couldn't you just turn some from some Ipe? I could do it for you if you don't have a lathe.

John,
if you contact Davey Marine direct through their website, they can get tufnol sheaves in custom sizes. There is a minimum order (dollar value...well, sterling pound, technically) but they are pretty reasonable. I went with this to replace the odd size sheave in an old Albacore mast....and they sold me a chunk of scrap tufnol for a pittance to make a new mast cuff for the rotating mast on the 'core. Shipping to canuckia was reasonable, and I had the bits about 15 days after ordering....I was happy.

Most local plastic suppliers would have Delrin (acetal).

just buy the tufnol at a plastic supplier and have someone local turn them for you, you could make them on a drill press with a holesaw and some files.

Thanks all for the advice. I'll contact Davey and check their price. If too outrageous - I'll try some of the alternate solutions.

You can check their prices, or at least get an idea, by going to the Wooden Boat Foundation in Port Townsend: www.woodenboat.org
Go to the online store. I was looking at these also. I would go with Davey though, you pay a bit more but their stuff is very nice and worth the cost IMO.

If you wanna make them with ball bearings.......I purchased the Harken type, took them apart and made a couple of drawings, and had the sheaves made......the bearings can be purchased by the bagful......I used them for the wood shell blocks on my boat....just like a Harken.....or Antal......
