I am currently restoring a wooden, clinker, Yachting World dayboat, 14'(1966)and intend sanding back to the mahogany planks. There are several gaps where the planks meet the stem and transon and I would like to know whether to fill with putty/red lead as some original builders used. I would prefer other ideas as red lead may not be available. The boat is painted at present but after sanding I intend to varnish, what's best to use?

Nothing wrong with the old putty. If you are cleaning out the seams, make sure you prime them with red lead before applying the compound. It will stay in better. Lots of different caulking available for your purpose, but I find the putty stays flat and smooth when it is painted over. ;)
P.S Interlux still make a traditional seam compound
