View Full Version : Lapstrake plans help
I would like to build a lapstrake outboard runabout similar to the thompsons or lymans. I live in the east Idaho desert and would like to do the strakes in douglas fir w/ white oak or ash ribs. White pine would be nice for trim.
:confused:Any clue on where I could get plans? Is the wood selection (preference) compatible?
Just another direction in which I would like to take my woodworking skills. Don't really want to 'copy' one of the above by rescuing one for templates. Any idea where I can get a 60hp 2 cylinder Johnson/Evinrude? Thanks, J.D.

Lapstraked plans are around did you look here? http://www.simmonsseaskiff.com/
If you're talking about 2 strokers...There isn't any 60hp 2 cylinders Johnson/Evinrude that I know of.. But there is 50 - 65HP 3 cylinders.. Check into Craigslist or Ebay for it..

I have sets of drawings from Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. of Peshtigo, WI for the 1962 and 1965 model year. These are very cursory drawings. 8 1/2" x 11" one drawing per model. The 1962 drwgs have a plan and longitudinal section. NO dimensions are given.
The '65 drwgs show a plan with locations of hardware such as cleats and chocks and lights. It also gives the type of hardware - for example Kainer T-8 cleats.....
I sell 'em on ebay evey once and a while.
I'll sell 'em for the cost of photocopying and postage.
The Chris-Craft Archives formerly housed at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA has lots of info. on Chris-Craft boats. Plans are available for many of the models. They may have plans for the Sea Skiff lapstrake models. There were a few outboards in the Sea Skiff line in about 1963-64. These archives are currently being moved to a new location. Nothing can be retreived until Autumn 2008.
Look at craigs list and ebay for old outboards. www.aomci.org (http://www.aomci.org) has a classified section. www.fiberglasics.com (http://www.fiberglasics.com) and www.bigfinboats.com (http://www.bigfinboats.com) and www.classicboathouse.com (http://www.classicboathouse.com) should be consulted for outboards.
