What is she and where can I get the plans?
She's beautifull, and about the right size. Could she be fitted for a small v or direct drive?
Great movies, is that a first for the forum?

i just got back again. I posted the pics and movies and went put her back in! Took my son for a short ride. MAN, I AM PUMPED!

The engine still needs some fine tuning...a slight miss at idle, but nothing major. You may have noticed the center cowl is missing...it's on the way from Ga, a good guy over there.

Mike, Chivas it is! Maybe two...

Paladinsfo, naw, I'll leave the lifting eyes out for now. Sorry, bud. smile.gif

Conard, by the HARDEST did I come home.

Gert, the boat is from Glen-L Marine's designs, namely "Zip". Mine has no name yet.

No name yet, John, but I'm working on it. The "public" launch is to be held at another time.

Thanks to my two neighbors for coming with me to shoot the photos and movies on their digital cameras, and take the first ride.

Oh, man...I won't sleep tonight!

The movies are great too! I started the first one downloading and got sidetracked. Dave comes and finds me and says, "Your computer is making a noise like an outboard." Too Cool!! :D

nothin like the feeling you get from cruising

built yourself. I am very proud of you! :)We

Awesome movies, awesome boat. I hope mine looks half as good and goes half as fast. She really planes nicely. How'd she handle in the turns?

Oh, wow... Roger! Now I'm gonna want a boat that goes FAST too!!! Great movies! Any "surprises" in how she handles, sounds, feels, etc. at speed? Can I come play?

(LOVE the hair blowing back, btw... Nice touch! ;) )

Well, I slept pretty good, after all. smile.gif

Ken, you know, it's funny you should ask about comments. The day before, I was at the mechanic's shop and there were three other people there: an old guy and two guys in maybe mid-20s. The two younger ones were eyeing the boat, and I was waiting for some snide comment, but they said, "Man, that sure is beautiful," or something similar. Then one asked, "How old is it? How long did it take you to restore it?"

Those were musical words to my ears! I guess it was then, and only then, I realized I had done something good. Here's the best part, though. Roy, my mechanic, told the guys the boat was brand new, ain't even been in the water yet, and they didn't believe it. They turned to the older guy standing there and asked him it if was true! The older guy said, "I dunno, ask him," and jabbed his thumb at me. It was cool.

Jeff, and others who asked, I haven't made any high speed turns yet, because the bayou is too narrow. I plan to take it to the lake this weekend, so we'll see then. And Jeff, I am sure yours will surpass mine in quality and speed! ;)

Art, surprises: I was surprised how the low freeboard didn't bother me as much once it was in the water. Sitting in it while on the trailer, I felt like the Jolly Green Giant, but it didn't feel that bad on the water. Throttling up, the behind wiggles a little until she planes out and gets on step, but smooth as silk after that. I find that about 3/4 throttle is perfect, full throttle she noses down a little and I don't like pushing a 44-year old outboard that hard!

And Matt's right, the motor was the thing that really sets off the lines, I think. Several times over the last eight months I've been fighting it I have cussed myself for buying something so old. The engine was purchased from Ebay. I knew I would have to put some work into it, and my actual expense wasn't that great, but availability of parts was a pain. I will start watching Ebay for spare electronics, fuel system, etc., to have on hand so I don't have to start searching when I need them.

You know what sucks? I gotta go get it inspected by Wildlife and Fisheries Friday morning, then stick profane, ugly registration numbers and a decal on the bow. I hate Louisiana.

Roger Stouff
05-16-2002, 07:15 AM
Mike, I found 14' ones from Grubb's Marine in Pa. Worked Great! I would have preferred 12', but I'm happy as a bug on a rug with what I've got. Luckily, have the Merc manual to help me get the controls reassembled and installed.

That's not a bad idea for the numbers. I think mahog would be too dark on the hull (dadgum wildlife agents get persnickety about it) but maybe something more blonde...cypress, perhaps?

Well Rog... After watching the last movie i got up, went to the garage and worked on my Zip the rest of the day.... If mine can look Half as good as yours i will be proud!...

Just a question, What was your top speed (approx) at 3/4 throddle.? I am putting a 40 hp on mine and would like to hit 35 mph at least.

GREAT JOB ROG!

Hey, Roger. If you head up the Big Muddy, hang a right on the Ohio, then a left on the Hocking, you could come visit me. I'm about 7 miles up the Hocking on the left bank. The way that boat moves, shouldn't take long to get here!! ;)

I love it!

Thanks again for all your kindnesses.

Rob, I haven't put the GPS to it yet, but I'm guessing 35 is about right. I'm going to check more accurately this weekend!

Jeff,
I don't think you'll do much less than me, even at that. Pitch the prop right for the boat, and you'll do great.

Mike,
Yeah, I'm going to go with vinyl with a nice font and color. There's still the matter of that stupid big 3x3 white decal. Argggghh...

I'm taking her for inspection in the morning. Hope she passes!
