In my short time as the 'Dragon dude' I have seen more than a few small successes, and have reported upon them here whenever the fit has taken me, but one very nice story that I have been remiss about sharing with you is the fleet at the Royal Vancouver YC.
At a time when we are trying everything that we can think of to promote and get people interested, the guys at the RVYC have apparently struck a chord with a few people in the PNW and has seen their membership grow. There are a couple of Americans that keep their boats up there for the racing. Last year the fleet went east and bought a nice boat from Cleveland, brought it back to the club and sold it to someone who had been sailing something else. They are already looking for other potential boats to match with new owners. This year an owner is moving out west from the Toronto area to join their fleet. In the early racing this year they have been getting nine boats on the line, which makes them the bell-cow fleet for North America.
This year in July they will be hosting the Pacific Rim Interport regatta for Dragons, with visiting sailors from Australia, Hong Kong, and Japan traveling to Vancouver to race with the Canadians. Also this year, the job of Canadian National Secretary moved west from Toronto when Paul Taylor took the helm. A lot going on in Vancouver.
Last year I awarded the Vancouver fleet the 'fleet of the year' trophy for the AIDA and it looks like they are going to take that and run with it this year. If you enjoy racing in classic designs and would be interested in speaking with someone from the fleet at the RVYC please let me know, or take a look at www.royalvan.com and see all of the fun they are having. There are a lot of good things happening in the PNW with Dragons these days, and we'd love to have anyone who posts or reads here be involved.
