View Full Version : Cheoy Lee Deck
Refresh my memory, please - how did Cheoy Lee build a teak-over-ply deck on a '63 vintage Lion? Bedding compound between teak/ply? Any unusual construction details to be aware of? Thanks.
Or, more to the point, what's the hard, black shiny stuff in the deck seams, beneath the seam compound?

Don't know, but most likely it was polysulfide. That was the standard for teak caulking, and a commonly used bedding compound as well.

Usually screwed UP from the ply into the teak, with brass screws that will have dezincified by now.

The poor quality of asian plywood in the 60's was the biggest problem. The resourcenal glue used was fine but the manufactures did not press the product properly while curing and the thickness of the veneers were greater. Generally, the bulkeads on Choey-Lees and decking plywood is the first to go. Now, add 1,000 wood screws for the teak. :D
On both the older and fiberglass versions, teak was bedded in TAR. Any HARD black seam filler, is polysulfide. After curing polysulfides continue to "leach out" its curing agents, making it more brittle and less flexible.

I've been chewing on this one for several years now and I finally bit the bullet - gave the go-ahead this morning for a new deck. New plywood, with dynel/epoxy over.
