I am rebuilding a 15' lapstrake runabout. I have come to the point where I am-AT LAST-ready to begin actually putting wood back ON the boat. I have decided to try my hand at both clinch nails and half-hard copper rivets with bronze ring nails. My question to all of you now is, where to get them from? I have found no nails online, and millions of rivets--all of which seem to be for steel. Is there a decent mail-order Co. for these fasteners? BTW, Jametown Dist. seems to only have steel rivets :( and they were my first guess. Feel free to post, email or aim me.

A-Dawg,

Your error is in expecting that you would use "rivets" to rivet a wooden boat. ;)

Jamestown Distributors should have copper nails and roves appropriate to the purpose.

EEK! I knew this forum was a good idea. Jamestown--from what I can see--does not have the copper. Anyone have any suggestions?

The 'rivets' are under 'Rose head boat nails' - copper

A-Dawg,

Jamestown's web site isn't conducive to pasting as specific product link, but if you go to "Fasteners" and scroll down, you'll see under "Nails" a listing for "Common Nails." Click this, then choose "Copper." Or, under "Nails" you can also choose "Rose headed boat nails, Copper." (I assume the prices for the latter are per box, not per nail!)

Just above the "Nails" heading, you'll see "burrs" and "copper roves." One of these is what you need for the other side, before cutting and peening the rivet.
